We are using Drosophila as a model system to investigate the mechanism of nervous system development and function. In particular, we focus on glial cells, the arising star in mediating virtually all aspects of neuronal function. Bear resemblance in many ways to mammalian glia, Drosophila glial cells are comprised of a variety of morphological classes and exhibit similar functions to their mammalian counterparts. Previous work from our laboratory has elucidated a distinct pathway, the ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation, regulates embryonic glial cell development. Extended from these work, we are now interested in topics including 1. Ubiquitination-mediated degradation regulates neuronal and glial development. 2. Neurons-glia interaction and its physiological relevance in synaptic function. 3. Glial cells function in behaviors and implications for neurodegenerative diseases: insights from fruitflies. |
