Sorry to hear that. But I don't think it is a bad news. Maybe the smiling fish can bring you happiness and teach you to smile. However, the fish is not happy in a strange place  due to leaving its home. It may miss her mother.  It passed away because of excessive missing. So, please don't bury your smiling fish under your pine tree. You should put it into a river or sea. Because these place is the closest from its family.

You're right. I'm so selfish as to take her home and make her to live in a place that she doesn't belong to, and even selfish to keep her far away from her family after the death
