Xinliang left us for ever.
Xinliang is 48 years old this year, but he died days ago. He is a nephew of my mother, his father is my mother's younger brother. Originally, Xinliang lived in a very faraway place, but his father killed a local leader and was sentenced to death when Xinliang was still very young. Later, Xinliang's mother became the wife of my uncle, Xinliang and his two brothers also joined the new family. My uncle is very nice to Xinliang and his brothers. Later, Xinliang's mother gave birth to another boy. They all call my uncle Dad. They were all very nice boys, hard-working, faithful and upright. But, at that time, the condition of Xinliang's family was like all others, lfe was poor! Xinliang and his brothers lived in countryside with their parents. My uncle is a carpenter, he taught his sons how to make things with wood. Perhaps, Xinliang began his life as a carpenter when he was about 18. I still remember Xinliang's smiling and his voice. Later, under the help of the family, Xinliang got married. Perhaps after all his three brothers got married, or at least two of them got married, Xinliang had his own house. At that time, the condition was already much better in countryside. When he was young, Xinliang often traveled around by bicycles with his father, taking their utensiles to make tables, doors, stools for the farmers. I know sometimes they can go as far as 20 or 30 km from his home. When things got better, Xinliang opened a store, making and selling furniture to local people. He was richer than before, and life was much better than when he was young. He had one daughter and one son. One year, when I got home, parents told me Xinliang was badly hurt. He lived in his store at night by himself. It was cold in my hometown in winter. Tradionally, people sleep on Kang, a bed-like structure which can be heated with staw or firewood to keep warm. But the Kang has to be heated every day, it is also big in order to keep a big space in it. So, a Kang will occupy a big space in a room. Being big and being heated every day can be regarded as two fatal shortcomings of a Kang. So, some people will use a coal-bed instead of a Kang. The structure of a coal-bed is similar to a Kang, but it doesn't have an opening. It is covered with many long and think pieces of wood. So, in winter, people first remove the wood cover away, put some buring wheat straw in it, then cover the straw with thin coal, at last the coal-bed was covered with the wood. Then, the coal will burn gradually, the bed will become warm. Because there is not enough air inside the bed, the coal can only burn very slowly, there is not flake. After you put coal in a Kang, it can keep warm for many days. Also, the coal-bed is much smaller than the traditional Kang. However, the advanage is also is its disadvantage. Because there is not enough air inside the coal-bed, the coal can not burn fully, it may emit carbon monoxide. We know it is very toxic to people. This time, it was really carbon monoxide. Xinliang lived in the room by himself in winter, he closed all the windows and the door at night in order to keep the room warm. Perhaps that night the coal burned faster than often, perhaps.. The result is, when his wife and children found he was very late for breakfast (it happened at about 9 am, we only have two meals in my hometown), they went to his strore and broke into the room. The bed was too hot, some of the flesh on his hip was gone, and Xinliang himself was lying on the ground, unconsciously. He was hurt both by the heat and the gas. Later, he recovered very slowly, for about half a year, he can only sit in a chair, saliva often running down from his mouth, and he could not speak clearly. It was two years after that accident, I went to visit him. That was a summer afternoon, Xinliang was collecting wheat grains that has been basked during daytime, he was using a shovel with no difficult. When I got his home, his wife and his daughter were also present. I entered the gate, but the two ladies could not recognize me. In fact, I don't think the daughter has ever met me. The wife has, but the number of the chance must be very slim. Xinliang recoganized me. He said, you are Raymond! He smiled, with the familiar smile I have seen for so many times. But after that, he said nothing, only working. The gas and the burning did too huge an impact on him. Yesterday, I got a message from father, it said, Xinliang passed away! I was shocked, I think he is healthy enough to live another 20 years. But... Today, I phoned parents, mother said Xinliang was 48 this year. He has been suffering from illness for several months before his death. I attended Xinliang's wedding ceremony in one winter many years ago. His wife was from a very faraway place from his hometown, he got to know his wife during his working there. Jinke, one of my cousins took Xinliang's bride to the houes of the bridegroom with a bicycle in that winter day. It was about 10 or 11 when the bicycle team got to Xinliang's home, with the bride on the back seat of Jinke's bicycle. In our hometown, the bride's face was often covered with a kerchief before she met her in-laws, often it was a red kerchief. So was Xinliang's bride. I don't remember who it was, but there was someone calling, is the bride beautiful? Jinke was naugghy enough, he removed the kerchief on the face of the bride away with one hand, while the other hand is still steering the bicycle which was runnng on the frozen ground in the winter. We all laughed! Today, Xinliang was already gone. I can only say, God bless Xinliang and his family! |

Raymond? Rainman? I'm in faint.![]() Alright,a "coal-bed" itself doesn't sound like secure. Why didn't he use an electric blanket? At least it couldn't give off gas like Carbon Monoxide(CO). Anyway,I wish that you could restrain your grief and adapt to the inevitable changes. ![]() [ Last edited by lingyuandage on 2012-5-28 at 08:59 ] |
