[交流] Four years after Wenchuan Earthquake

At 14:28, May 12, 2008, a deadly earthquake occured at Wenchuan, Sichuan Province.

It killed more than 80000 poeople.

That day, at that moment, I was reading news at internet. When it happened, I felt the shaking. Because only the lamps in the canteen was hung with a wire from the roof, so I went there to find whether it was an earthquake. The swaying lamps confirmed me.

My 18-month old daughter was still sleeping, my wife was reading a book beside me. My mother was having a nap in another room. I took my daught, went upstairs, waked my mother and opened the door to the terrace and went out quickly with my families.

The teaching building on the campus of our school was about 100 methers away.

Students ran out of the building like a wave in a wide river. It was just the beginning time of afternoon teaching.

Mother said, let's go downstairs, what will we do if the building collapses? I said no, we do not have enough time. There is no lift in our building, we are on the sixth story.

I didn't notice how long the quake lasted. When later we went downstairs, I recieved a message from father, it said, " Earthquake happend in hometown, the shaking makes standing difficult. We feel dizzy." The message was still in my phone now. Another message said, "Collapses happened in the valley near our house, the valley was covered by mist of dust." Later, another message said, " The chimney of one of our neighbors collapsed."

I cann't remember whether I phoned my father at that time, but only remembered that I failed to reach him when I tried later. The phone call survice was jammed.

Nearly all the people went downstairs and stay in the yard in our community.

Message from radio said that an earthquake happened in Sichuan. This was told by other people to me.

At the beginning, we still felt it hard to pronouce the word "Wenchuan".

I cann't remember how we had our supper. As night came, several families sat on blanket or quilt in the yard, talking, waiting. We didn't know whether there would be more quakes.

That day, we went to bed at about 1 am.

In the following days, we watched TV often, hoping less people would be hurt, more people would be saved.

We complained why we didn't have large helicopters, why so many people lived in such a narrow valley.

I also wrote an essay in my blog to oppose building new habitats for local people.

I still remembered a boy was found under the building ruins about four or five days after the quake, he said he would like to get married after he was saved. The soldiers who were saving him talked with him as they worked in a hurry.

In minutes, he was pulled ourt from the ruins. But a minute or two after that, his breath stopped. All the people inside and outside the TV screen cried.  Just at this moment, when I was typping the above words, my eyes become blurred with tears.

Man is so fragile when faced with natural disasters.

I still think that we should not live in places which is apter to be affected by such a disaster.

Earthquake is the most special natural disaster. We can not predict it now. It affects numorous people in a very short time.

Wish we will live a safe life!

Wish those become paralyzed in the quake live a better life and get enough support!

it's really so nice you are, and the events happened those days are still clear to us, bcoz it's so shocked and really mournful, for the lost lives and miserable but moved stories......and I still remembered that moment that day, we were having a class, and suddenly the desk begun to sway, at first I thought it was my deskmate who shook, so I took a good look at her, but I found her still.... then the fluorescent lamp began to swing drastically, for me the one who first experience this, I didn't what happened, but someone yelled, "it's earthquake.."....then our teacher told us to go out, but he still stood on the platform...well, the next things happened seemed the same, we chatted outside, and telephone line couldn't connect to anywhere, slept outside...then a mass of news reported the situation of Wenchuan, and I almost couldn't sleep those days imaging the disaster and the tragic scene reported on the news, really suffered when you felt unable to do what you hoped to do...
