Plastic Flame Retardants. Technology and Current Developments (Rapra Review Reports) by J. Innes
Flame retardants increase safety and save lives. Their incorporation in various plastic products such as consumer electronics and appliances (telephones, coffeemakers, television cabinets, computer monitors), trash receptacles, upholstered furniture, drapery, carpeting, etc., can add up to additional escape time in a fire. Just ask any firefighter the value of extra seconds of escape time for fire victims. Even though the benefits of using FRs are well established, there are some complicating issues. Concerns about the effects of certain FRs on human health and the environment have taken centre stage in recent years. In Europe, these concerns initially focused on the production and disposal processes for FR plastic products. Regulations banning certain FR products are beginning to be enacted in Europe and voluntary restrictions on a few select FR products have been adopted by manufacturers around the world. These environmental issues will be discussed more fully in each of the FR technology sections to follow.
