Christoph Rademacher Antwort an: Christoph.Rademacher@mpikg.mpg.de Institution: Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces Ort: 14195 Berlin, Arnimallee 22 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The “Structural Glycobiology” group at the Max-Planck-Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Berlin-Dahlem is looking for a motivated and ambitious PhD candidate, holding a Diploma/MSc in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related subjects. Glycan/receptor interactions are an integral part of many key aspects of life such as cellular communication and host/pathogen interactions. Being involved in development, immunobiology and cancer metastasis renders these multivalent interactions fundamental and has drawn increasing attention. In order to manipulate glycan/receptor interactions in a physiologically relevant environment, molecular probes have to be developed that are highly specific. In particular, fragment-based lead discovery has emerged as an excellent tool for the development of high affinity small chemical probes. The candidate will use nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and other biophysical techniques to study the receptor recognition process and to conduct screening towards the development of high affinity ligands for mammalian lectins. The ligands will then be used to perform functional in vitro studies to answer important questions in the field of glycobiology and immunology. What is expected? • The candidate is expected to be a motivated team worker who fits into a multinational research environment. Confidence in spoken and written English is a requirement. • Strong experimental skills in the field of protein expression and purification in bacterial systems are essential. Practical and theoretical skills in NMR spectroscopy together with a general interest in structural biology would be helpful. We offer: The “Structural Glycobiology” group is a newly founded research group funded by the Emmy Noether Programme of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The group is embedded in the Department of Biomolecular Systems led by Prof. Dr. Peter H. Seeberger. The department is a well-equipped research facility providing stimulating grounds for scientific progress in an international, multidisciplinary research environment. A comprehensive repertoire of instruments stands alongside with high-profile collaborators in a fruitful research spectrum covering synthetic organic chemistry, biochemistry, nanotechnology, immunology and biophysics.
