KR desulfurization slag (KR slag) is a kind of solid waste which produced in steel industry, while hot metal desulfurized by KR (Kambara Reactor) mechanical stirring (KR desulfurization process). As the iron and steel enterprises have been expanding, and KR desulfurization process has been extending, the discharge of KR slag is increasing. For the lack of effective treatment, KR slag piles occupied a certain amount of land resources, but also caused pollution to the environment. So the study of its physicochemical properties and explore effective ways of using KR residue can eliminate its negative effects on the environment, at the same time reduce costs for enterprises. For the high levels of alkaline ingredients in KR slag, it can be applied to treat the acidic wastewater which is generated by the iron and steel enterprises. In this way, KR slag will be effective used, and raw materials to acidic wastewater will be saved. What’s more, the cost of business will be further reduced, due to the resources in the enterprise achieve recycling. In this paper, KR slag’s Physicochemical properties, such as particle size distribution, density distribution, magnetic distribution, chemical composition, mineral composition, heavy metals and surrounding topography, were studied by particle size sieving, heavy liquid separation, magnetic separation, XRD, ICP-AES and SEM etc. According to the KR slag containing high levels of alkaline components, KR slag is was used to titrated acid, and treat acid mine drainage and simulated acidic wastewater respectively to explore its ability of treating acidic wastewater, Four conclusions were drawn from this study:(1)The span of particle size is comparatively large in KR slag, but most of slag congregates smaller than 0.15mm on particle size. The grains in KR slag occur as block and clastic particles, with irregular particle shapes.(2)The 40~ 50% of KR slag is consist with CaO, 5~ 10% is f-CaO, 6~ 12% is TFe, 1~ 9% is FeO, 9~ 11% is SiO2, besides a certain amount of C, Al2O3, MgO and a litter of S, P, F. (3)Calcite, hydroxyl calcium stone, lime, calcium and iron oxide, calcium silicate and carbon are the KR slag mineral phases. In the different particle size segments, density segments and magnetic segments, the contents of chemical composition and mineral phase are variational. (4)In theory, The dosing quantity of KR slag used to treat acid mine drainage are 0.192g/L for A, 0.094g/L for B, 0.129g/L for C. In the other hand, the pH of wasterwater increase to six within two hours, when the dosing quantity of KR slag are only 0.115g/L for A, 0.075g/L for B and 0.78g/L for C for treating simulated acidic wastewater. But it need to increase dosage to treat acid mine drainage effectively in fact, because some components in KR slag can react with Ca(OH)2 and appear precipitation. On the whole, through the study of KR slag’s characteristics and its neutralizing acid, the acid mine drainage and simulated acidic wastewater, we have found that KR slag treatment of acidic wastewater, especially before treatment is an effective KR slag utilization |
