area on a cell membrane does affect rotational motion and the average interparticle spacing of the plasmon rulers. These areas were consistent with length scales of cell compartmentalization, confirming that organizational heterogeneity in a cell membrane occurs at scales well below the diffraction limit. The “dance” of plasmon rulers confined to the cell membrane is an ideal technique for studying the ebb and flow of the cellular surface at resolutions much higher than can be achieved with traditional particle tracking.
