PhD Assistantship – Biofuel and Bioenergy

The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at South Dakota State University (SDSU) is seeking a PhD student. The PhD program will involve in thermochemically converting biomass into liquid biofuels. Students will develop biomass to syngas or bio-oil and thus to gasoline/diesel processes and to investigate the effects of synthesis gas and bio-oil quality from biomass gasification and pyrolysis, Fischer-Tropsch catalysts, and the reaction conditions on hydrocarbon quality and yield.
The applicants should have degree/s in chemical, agricultural, or mechanical engineering, or related area. Previous experience in biomass gasification and pyrolysis, catalyst preparation and tubular reactor processing are desirable but not required.
The selected candidate will collaborate with the research team members who have expertise in the fields of biomass pretreatment, fast pyrolysis, gasification, bio-oil fractionation, bio-oil fermentation, and bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation at SDSU. The research program offers interdisciplinary research opportunities on biomass thermal chemical processing and bio-oil upgrading. The selected graduate research assistant will be offered a research assistantship with tuition and benefits.
