　　　leisure 空闲，闲暇，可作定语 n.  
　　　at leisure 有空（表语），从容地，慢慢地（状语）  
　　　leisurely 从容不迫地，不慌不忙地 adv.  
　　　　　　　 从容不迫的，不慌不忙的 adj.


Unit 11  
What have you been doing lately?  

1、路遇旧时挚友。你忙问他，近来忙什么：  
what have you been doing lately?  
2、这位女演员不再演电影了。她说，近来她开始为自己缝制衣服：  

3、他取出一叠图纸来给你看，说，这是他的最新设计;  
Lately've taken to making clothes by myself.  
4、同事告诉你一些公司的内幕。他说，这是最新消息;  
This is my latest design.  
5、他回忆当时的情景。他说，不会儿在那就发生了爆炸;  
AN instant late, the explosion occurred there.  
6、父亲问你什么时候能回来。你说，最迟十点钟回来：  
I'll be back at the finish it on Friday at the latest.  
7、老师布置了作业，又说，最迟星期五完成：  
You'll have to finish it on Friday at the last.  
8、你说择业问题现在困难很大。父亲说，迟早你也得面对：  
Sooner or later you'll have to face it.  

注：  
late 　adj. 迟，晚  
　　 （一段时间）靠后一段；最新；最近；前…已故…  
adv. 晚；到很晚（夜深）  
成语有：till late　直到很晚  
of late 近来  
later on 将来，以后，过些时候；后来，过了些时候  
sooner or later 迟早  
latest (late的最高级)  
lately adv. 近来，最近  
latter adj. 较后的，后面的，后者（加　the）  



Unit 12  
I know of the city  
1、朋友说他住在东山。你说，你听说过那个城市：  
I know of the city.  
2、你到朋友家，他的父亲就是那位著名的工程师。你说，不认识，但是听说过：  
I don't know him, but I know of him.  
3、朋友牙痛，你推荐了一位Jones医生。你说，他是人所周知的好牙医：  
He is known by everyone as a good dentist.  
4、你了解Mary。你说，她是因聪颖而出名的：  
Mary is known for her intelligence.  
5、你谈到最近生意上的事使你不思茶饭，经常失眠。朋友说，心理医生称这为紧张：  
It's known as tension from a psychiatrist's point of view.  
6、朋友打听一家信得过的美容院要去做面膜。你告诉他，你知道一家美容院：  
I know of a beauty salon.  
7、她说母亲是把芭蕾带进中国的舞蹈家。你说，她一定是以一个优秀的舞蹈家而著称于世的：  
She must be well known as an excellent dancer.  

注：  
　　know v. 知道，会，懂  
　　　　　 认识，了解，认得出来，区分  
成语有：be know as 作为…而出名；被称为…叫作  
be know for 因…而出名  
know of 听说过，知道有…  
intelligence n. 聪明，智力，头脑(不可数)  
psychiatrist n. 精神病学者  
psychologist n. 心理学家  
saloon 酒店，酒吧  
a hairdressing saloon 理发室  
salon 沙龙  


Unit 13  
I just want to talk to you.  
1、那个人总是跟着你，你问他为什么。他说，只想跟你聊一聊：  
I just want to talk to you.  
2、见他身陷困境，你说，只有一件事，你可以为他做：  
There's just one thing I can do for you.  
3、你们撞了个满怀，他倒高兴了，说，正好在找你：  
We were just looking for you.  
4、你在电脑里编辑文件，他送来了编辑软件。你说，你恰好想要这个：  
That's just what I want.  
5、路上遇到了一个熟人。他说，他刚刚出院，要回家去了：  
I'm just out of the hospital－I'm going home.  
6、朋友告诉你，他如何抓了小偷等等。你说，他刚刚讲的真有意思：  
What you just told me is very amusing.  
6、有人问你邮局在哪里。你手一指说，就在那边：  
Just over there.  
7、有人问你市政厅在哪里。你回答说，就在拐弯那边：  
Just round the corner.  
8、书已经定到最后一章了。你说，书马上就要完成了：  
The book is just about finished.  

注：  
just as 正像，就像  
just now 刚才  
just the same 照样  
just think 真想不到(祈使句、惊叹句)



Unit 14  
It's out of place.  
1、妹妹穿得花花哨哨要去赴宴。你说，这显得不得体：  
It's out of place.  
2、你告诉孩子们尊敬老人。你说，嘲笑老人是不应该的：  
It's out of place to laugh at the elderly.  
3、同学们没等校长讲完就大声吵嚷起来。你说，这样未等他离开就吵，是不恰当的：  
It was out of place to shut before he left.  
4、他一边吃饭一边哼着曲子。你对他说，这种场合下这种举动是不合适的：  
It was out of place to have such manners on this occasion.  
5、你赞扬导游小姐讲解的自然流畅。她说，起初夹在一群老外中间很是别扭：  
I felt out of place among the foreigners at first.  
6、你问姐姐换了家公司感觉怎么样。她说，她觉得很别扭：  
I felt out of place.  
7、姑娘怎么都不肯起来跳舞。她说，穿得这样不讲究，跳舞不合适：  
It's out of place to dance wearing such informal clothes.  
8、你一身牛仔装，而所有的客人都是西装革履。你说，你要走，你说你在这里觉得不自在：  
I'm leaving. I feel out of place being here.  

注：  
out of place 放的地方不对，离开原来的地方；不恰当；不协调，格格不入  
in place 适合，适当；放在本应放置的位置  
in place (of) 代替  
take the place of 接替(职务、工作)  
manner v. 方式，态度，样子(单数)；礼貌(复数)；风采，习俗(复数)  
formally adv. 正式地  
informally 非正式地  



Unit 15  
They have no children of their own.  
1、两位老人到了晚年很孤独。你说，他们没有自己的孩子：  
They have no children of their own.  
2、父亲让儿子开他的车。儿子说，他想要一辆自己的车：  
I want to have a car of my own.  
3、你认定这是最好的解决办法。你说，你自己的经验也证明了这一点：  
An experience of my own confirmed this.  
4、老人感到很欣慰。他说，五个孩子都有了各自的生活天地：  
The five children have lives of their own.  
5、别人都帮不上你的忙。你说，你要靠自己去做：  
I'll do it on my own.  
6、父亲唠叨得太多了。你说，你毕业以后就要自己住：  
I'll live on my own after my graduation.  
7、干到一半，朋友说他不干了，要走。你问他，难道要把这一切都留给你一个人吗：  
Do you mean I have to get all these done on my own?  
8、往年你都是同大家一起去度假0。你说，你今年要独自去度假：  
This year I'll go on vacation on my own.  

注：  
own adj. 自己的  
pron. 自己的东西  
v 拥有，占有  
成语有：  
on one's own time 用自己的(业余课余)时间  
come into one's own 受到(应得的)尊敬  
得到(应得的)财产  
of one's own 自己的  
on one's own 独自，靠自己的力量；独自一人；突出，无人能比  
confirm v. 证实，确定，肯定，加强  




Unit 16  
Don't think so little of yourself.  
1、参赛前他流露出不自信。父亲说，别太小瞧自己了：  
Don't think so little of yourself.  
2、朋友愿出力，你却觉得一件小事不好意思求人。你说，这么点小事不麻烦他：  
I can't bother you with my little affairs.  
3、你说你小时候生长的地方很美。朋友问，那里有没有小溪和两岸的柳树：  
Was there a little stream with willows on both sides?  
4、朋友问你喜不喜欢加拿大。你说，喜欢这个国家，但很少有机会去：  
I like the country, but I have little opportunity to go there.  
5、你问母亲家里还有没有牛奶。母亲说，还有一点儿：  
There is still a little.  
6、他说这次只能借给你一百元钱。你说，那太少了：  
That's too little.  
7、朋友说这辆车子折了半价，你怎么都不买。你说，你没有钱：  
I have little money.  
8、记者问你政局的事。你说，你对政治形势知之甚少：  
I know little of the political situation.  
9、朋友问你Peter最近在干什么，总是见不到。你说，你很少见他：  
I see very little lf him.  



Unit 17  
How long does it take you to get there?  
1、朋友以为你上班很远。他问你，要多久才能到那里：  
How long does it take you to get there?  
2、路程有点儿远。你说，但是开车只需要十多分钟：  
But it takes ten minutes' drive to get there.  

3、客人问要等多久。你说，用电脑只需要几秒钟就可以确认他的预定票了：  
It takes the computer only a few seconds to confirm the reservation.  
4、投资人担心工期过长。你说，最长用不了一年就完工了：  
It won't take more than a year to finish it.  
5、大家都羡慕他今日的成就。你说，他花了十年才成为有名的钢琴家：  
It took him ten years to become a famous pianist.  
6、你到机场去送朋友，让他保重。你说，飞机要飞十多个小时的：  
The flight will take you more than ten hours.  
7、机器坏了，而你又急着用。就问机械师，要很久才能修好吗：  
Will it take long for you to repair the machine?  
8、他决定离开自己从事多年的老师职业去经商。他说，他用了很长时间才打定主意：  
It took me a ling time to make up my mind.  

注：  
在这里take意为做某事花费了多少时间，同样有时用spend，cost也表示花费时间，它们的区别是：  
take和cost表示人们为不愿意做或不得不做的事而"花费"时间，而spend暗含所做的事"花去"时间是应该的，愿意怕  
It took me an hour to find you. (无奈情绪)  
She spends 10 hours playing the piano. (喜欢弹琴，一练就是10小时)  
如果说It took her ten hours to play the piano则意为：由于难，内容多，不得不用上10个小时  
reservation n. 保留（意见）  
　　　　　　　（美语）定票、定坐、定位  
famous adj. 有名的，著名的  
这个词相对意义的词为unknown不知名的  
infamous 意为：声名狼藉的，臭名昭著的  



Unit 18  
I'm afraid I can't stay.  
1、你向主人道别。说，你恐怕不能再久留了：  
I'm afraid I can't stay.  
2、有个坏消息，你要婉转地告诉他。你说，恐怕你给他带来一个坏消息：  
I'm afraid I've got bad news for you.  
3、你看了医生，医生认为你病得不轻。他说，恐怕得卧床一周：  
I'm afraid you have to stay in bed for a week.  
4、你与同事之间产生了分歧。有一天你主动和解，你说，恐怕有某种误会：  
I'm afraid there's some sort of misunderstanding.  
5、讲了半天他还是不明白。你说，恐怕他是不得要领：  
I'm afraid you don't see my point.  
6、与小姐共舞时候不小心踩了人家的脚。你不好意思地说，恐怕跳舞你不是内行：  
I'm afraid I'm not much of a dancer.  
7、你婉转地谢绝了朋友的邀请。你说，恐怕你不能同去：  
I'm afraid I can't go together with you.  
8、你怕朋友再继续没完没了地谈下去。就打断他说，恐怕要误火车了：  
I'm afraid we'll miss the train.  

注：  
afraid adj.  
I'm afraid 后面跟从句，或做插入语，使语气更加婉转；或回答别人问题时说I'm afraid not 或I'm afraid so  
例如：Most of us are afraid to eat snake.多数人不敢吃蛇（意味相当于因害怕而不敢，不乐意做）John is afraid of losing his job. John总是提心吊胆怕丢了饭碗（担心或忧虑某事发生）




Unit 19  
Take the medicine again at five.  

1、医生来看望他。临走时嘱咐说，5点钟再吃一次药：  
Take the medicine again at five.  
2、同学在教室里踢球玻璃打破了。老师对他们说，他们要下定决心不能再这样做了：  
Make up your mind not to do it again.  
3、你们俩在一次活动中见过面。你说，又一次见到他很高兴：  
I'm glad to meet you again.  
4、哥哥临走的时候要你照看他的房子。最后说，另外，还有一件事要告诉你：  
And again, I've another thing to tell you.  
5、朋友吃了一份比萨饼。你说，不算多，你可以再吃那么多：  
That isn't much－I could eat as much again.  
6、父亲很想念弟弟。那天接到了弟弟的来信。你说，他把信从头到尾读了一遍又一遍：  
He read the letter through again an again.  
7、你觉得他不是学得不到家，就说：让我们再来试一次：  
Let's try again.  
8、儿子不知道"推敲"是什么意思。你说，就是把同样的问题反复地想：  
Time and time again, you think about the same question.  

注：  
again: adv. 再次，又一次；重新；另外，还  
成语有：  
again and again 反复地，一再地  
as much again 多一倍  
now and again 不时地，间或  
once again　　　再来一次  
over and over again 一再地  
time and time again 一再地，多次  
注意下面两句的差别  
I shall never do it again 我将永远不做它  
I shall not do it again forever 我将来并不永远做它  




Unit 20  
The car takes a lot of oil.  
1、父问这车有没有什么缺点。他回答说，这车太耗油：  
The car takes a lot of oil.  
2、他写东西写得不耐烦了。你说，写一本书肯定是会耗时的：  
Writing a book will surely take a lot of time.  
3、给他做说服工作真是太难了。你说，花费很大的力气才能说服他：  
It takes a lot of convincing.  
4、大家都说Elisa嫁给了那个她原本不喜欢的老板。你说，难以置信：  
It takes some believing.  
5、你以为主编是来向你催稿子的，可主编说，不用急：  
Take you time.  
6、你问空姐这飞机能容下多少旅客。她说，这飞机能容下200人：  
The airplane takes two hundred people.  
7、面对新发生的一切，你告慰自己，既来之，则安之：  
Take things as they come.  
8、你为不能得到家人的谅解面担忧。哥哥说，别把事情看得太重：  
Let's not take anything too seriously.  
9、这是一个原则问题，不能忽视。你说，你是认真的，不开玩笑：  
I take the seriously. I'm not kidding.  
注：  
take　v. 占用，花掉，用上了（时间，金钱）  
　　　　 有时译法比校活，有时不宜译出  
有谚语说：It takes two to quarrel 相当于汉语的：孤掌难鸣  
美国人说：I won't be taken for a ride. 的意思是：我可不上当  
Taken by itself 就本身来说  
You 're kidding　美语中用于关系比较亲近的朋友间，当你对所说的话不赞同，不认可时说，相当于汉语的：我才不相信！别开玩笑了。
