| Crack path deflection reduces crack growth rates in two ways: (i) it causes a direct reduction of the local driving force for crack propagation and an increase in the total length of crack path which results in lower nominal crack growth rates [5,7,23,24]; and (ii) it induces roughness-induced crack closure, resulting in a reduction of the stress intensity range experienced at the crack tip from the nominally applied value DK to the effective value DKeff. These two effects are referred to as extrinsic retardation mechanisms [25]. |
