Roughness-induced crack closure depends not only on deflection angles but also on height distributions of the crack paths as discussed in the preceding subsections. In addition, it depends on fracture mode. As a consequence, lower nominal crack growth rates are observed in CL than in FL (Fig. 9a) due to higher level of crack closure attributed to higher SH in CL. Furthermore, in spite of the low intrinsic crack growth rates,the high nominal crack growth rates are observed in EQ due to a low level of crack closure. This is attributed to the influence of ductile fracture areas. |
