How did you chooose your English name?

How did you choose your English name? This is really a question for we Chinese. I chose my first English name when I was an undergraduate, that is many years ago. At that time, we had an English teacher, Susan, she was bout 65 then. We, students from different departments gathered at weekends, to listen to her teaching. I remember that in the first class, she taught us the song, If You Are Happy. She gave printed lyrics to us, for students sitting side by side, she said, "You share." Oh, this meaning can be expressed this way! I felt so happy about what she taught uus. Later, that activity became into an English Corner. Every time, she wrote a topic and we discuss in groups. Once, she gave us some cards, and asked us to write any questions about the topic. The result is that she only got one quesiton from our group. Also, in the first class, she gave us a list of English names and asked us to choose one for each of ourselves. My step is, browsing the list from A to Z. At C, I found Charles, I thought, the prenouciation of /char/ is very nice, so I chose Charles. The pity is that, in my class, another boy also chose Charles. Susan named me Charles II. ![]() Later, Charles I didn't come, I became the only Charles in the class. In 2005, I attended an English training programm in Xi'an. In the first class, the teacher, Judy, asked whether we had an English name, if no, we had to choose one. I told her, mine is Charles. I said twice, but she didn't catch it. Did I pronouce it correctly? Or is it because it is hard to pronouce it correctly? So, I gave up, I said, I will choose another one for me. Browsing from A again. This time, I stopped at D, oh Daniel! This is a good one. I told Judy, I chose Daniel. This time, there wasn't another one who also chose Danile! But, later, I found nealy all my classmates' name begin with letter from A to L. Of course, this is because for most of us, we chose names alphabitically from A, your attention is often caught by names appear early in the list. What happened later made me fee sorry for my choice. In one US movie, a man told another, there are one MILLION Daniel in xxx (the name of a state)! ![]() Oh, I have to choose another name for me. How did you choose yours? |
