Confessions from a ‘bad’ person
|

We’ve all had somewhat similar experience: you had an argument with lovers or friends, and they start fighting back with words that are unpleasant, right after the honeymoon period-the barely controlled temper, the usually unabating silence, all of which makes the relationship suddenly frozen. But I am not as bad as you’ve claimed so far. A husband might not present you a surprise gift with shiny diamonds on your birthday since his wage is merely enough for supporting the whole family-during his early career. A boyfriend may not show you romanticness, compared to others, due to his introvert personality. But as far as I can tell and confirm, they are all good persons, whether you are rich or poor, right or wrong. This, in turn, triggers my self-reflection or self-awareness to surface from the inner side, a feeling that is hardly to deny when bad things happen. My thoughts go beyond the narrow description of a bad person, in the light of dealing relationship with others. “Am I bad a person?” Truly, I don’t have many chances to help elders to cross streets, save idle seats for pregnant women, or handling out a few portions of money to beggars or homeless people. No one is cold-blooded enough, as firmly as I believe, to ignore the need and extinguish the warmness. But occasionally, we tend to walk away due to the judgmental look from bystanders. Did that make you a bad person? I doubt that. Part of the problem is that the kind of person who is willing to shed the hope and enlighten the wickedness oftentimes shies away from being labeled as a ‘good’ person. The moral standard is too high to climb, bearing so many responsibilities in the end. This all becomes ironically when a person trying to save a hit-and-run victim is recounted as the bloodless troublemaker. It is frightening and terrible to witness so many cases, now becoming more likely happening each day and night, in our modern society which has already been deprived of simple dignity and humanity. Where is our promising future, if all the good men start to fade away and vanish? Do you still remember our childhood dream, rolling in the deep? I want to be a wholehearted and brave policeman to defend the justice, a selfless and loving teacher to nourish the future garden, and an unrenowned and humble worker to build the society. This seems to be gone forever as we grow up, a generation that has been tarnished by the mixed pot. Have you done something ‘bad’ in the eyes of others? Do you have a chance to stand up and shout loudly? So what is your thought of being a good person? Those answers are simple, but complex as well. Searching an answer for yourself defines your character, your values, and your future, in some sense and in some day. |
