European Tea Committee Surveillance on Pesticide residues in Tea (2003-2004) (Based on communication from Tea Board, India) The European Tea Committee has published a Surveillance report on Pesticide Residues of all teas imported into EU during 2003 to 2004. Samples were drawn randomly and analyzed for the presence of residues of various pesticides. The surveillance report contained observations on Indian teas from Darjeeling, Assam and South India. From the report it is seen that residues of few chemicals are present in Indian teas exported to EU. In many cases, the limits may be within the permissible levels but their presence has caused concern in the minds of the importer of Indian teas in EU. Tea Board was regularly circulating such information indicating that adequate measures should be taken to prevent residues of any pesticide in Indian teas. In case of EU, we need to take extra care at all levels. The report gives sufficient information about residue contents in tea. There are substances for which the producers and the traders need to take precautions to avoid hazards. It is requested that the estates analyses tea samples for residue contents regularly. In case teas are exported to EU, one should take more care so that the stringent EU MRL s are complied with. Report on teas from south India Tea samples from south India recorded decrease in the incidence of endosulfan (from 21.1% in 2003 to 6.3% in 2004); no samples exceeded the 30mg/kg EU limit. Incidence of dicofol continued to be high at 43.8% but no sample exceeded the EU limit of 20 mg/kg. Incidence of ethion residues decreased from 26.3% in 2003 to 12.5% in 2004. No sample exceeded the EU limit of 3 mg/kg. Propargite was observed in 25.0% of samples all of them being above the EU limit. Fenpropathrin was observed in 12.5% of samples; all were above the German limit of 0.05 mg/kg. Incidence of residues of Fenvalerate was 6.3%; all samples had more residues than the relevant EU limits. [ Last edited by kidy008 on 2008-10-2 at 07:18 ] |
