Please note that the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is mandatory for foreign visitors who are working or
studying at universities in Ontario and must be obtained within 30 days of arrival in Canada. You will need to
purchase UHIP for the 3 months before the Ontario Health Plan takes effect.
Please note that if there are family members accompanying you , they must purchase UHIP coverage for their
ENTIRE stay. UHIP coverage for dependents must be applied for within 30 days of arrival in Ontario, otherwise
your dependents may be limited for, or even declined, coverage; additionally, a $500 penalty will be applied after
the 30-day period. Your cost to enroll in UHIP will depend on the number of people covered and the length of
time you will be in Ontario. The website for UHIP information I frequently asked questions: http://www.uhip.ca/
At the end of 3 months, you may be eligible for the Ontario Government's Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). The
website for this insurance is: http://www.health.qov.on.ca/english/public/program/ohip/ohip mn.html. If you do not
qualify for OHIP, you will have to purchase additional UHIP coverage for your entire stay. Family members are
never eligible for OHIP.
