What is IDL? IDL stands for “Interactive Data Language”, and it is an interpreted computer language written in C that is used primarily by: ? scientists and engineers who want to analyze and visualize their data ? software programmers who want to develop and distribute an applic Since IDL is an interpreted language, execution of IDL commands (whether at the IDL> command prompt or within an IDL program) is performed by the “IDL interpreter”. Although there is a “compiler” within IDL, your IDL code is never broken down into true native machine code. The IDL compiler is actually what is known as a “P-Code compiler”, which is a special type of translator that preprocesses the IDL code in a kind of quasi-compilation step to produce an intermediate representation called “P-Code”. P-Code is, in this case, essentially "IDL interpreter code". IDL P-Code is similar in concept to Java byte codes, although their actual implementation is very different. Similarly, the IDL interpreter is analogous to the Java Virtual Machine. In other words, the IDL compiler simply translates IDL code into its interpreter P-Code, which is then interpreted by the IDL interpreter at run-time. |
