Job: Post-doctoral Associate Title Post-doctoral Associate Categories Post-Doctoral Organization Aveda/University of Minnesota Location Twin Cities, MN Website http://www.horticulture.umn.edu Contact hegem007@umn.edu Job Information Duties/Responsibilities: DUTIES: Once hired the postdoctoral scientist will be responsible for orchestrating the creation of a botanical library in consultation with an advisory group composed of project coordinators at UMN and Aveda. Actual collection of botanical materials may be accomplished with the assistance other individuals, and will include botanical indexing, and capture of GPS coordinates for collection sites and small archived botanical samples for DNA fingerprinting. The individual will also be responsible for establishing best practices for library storage, utilization and maintaining library quality control measures. We anticipate that quality control will include metabolic fingerprinting of all library extracts via LC-MS. The postdoctoral scientist may also assist a technician with establishing procedures for new high-throughput assays and with designing the approach and protocol for bioassay-guided purification and characterization of target natural products. Required/Preferred Qualifications: Postdoctoral Associate in Phytochemistry and Plant Metabolomics A postdoctoral research position is available immediately to a highly motivated scientist interested in joining an ongoing collaborative research venture between the University of Minnesota and Aveda (an affiliate of The Estee Lauder Companies Inc.) The aim of this project is to identify and characterize active chemical components of North American native or naturalized plant species for use in cosmetics formulations. It is hoped that these plant materials can provide a sustainable local alternative to petroleum-based ingredients that can be produced within Aveda’s green and organic ingredient sourcing policy. REQUIRED: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field with a strong record of productivity (as determined by record of publication, presentation, patents etc.). Expertise in phytochemical analysis and characterization of botanical materials required. Experience with bioassay-directed fractionation and/or high-throughput bioactivity screening is strongly desirable.
