Over the years, we as Americans have tried to learn about and connect with the great heritage and culture of China, the Central Kingdom. What I find most intriguing is the language itself. It offers functionality and graphic beauty beyond any other language written or spoken on the globe. I have also learned that one of the unique forms and crown jewel of the Chinese language is symmetrical pairing, or “dui lian”; in which a pair of perfectly symmetrical and parallel sentences are displayed and further enhanced with intonation. The dui lian artform plays an important role in cultural traditions and is widely used in homes, temples and other important gathering places. So before our trip, we decided to play this Chinese word game, it serves as a fitting exercise as our main function here is to tell the great story of our county, Fort Bend. We created the first half of the dui lian with great care; Fort Bend si hai, with which we want to pass the message that Fort Bend County is blessed with enormous natural beauty and resources overflowing to reach seven seas, the Chinese prefer to call them the 4 seas. We issued a challenge to the world via Witmart.com to come up with the second half of the dui lian. The contest got immediate attention and received many good entries in a very short time. Here are some interesting ones, while some of them were good enough in sense of artform requirements, none captured the essence and spirit of the our original. Then this entry truly commanded our attention. This one is perfect and aligns with each aspect of dui lian. Now the second half compliments the first half to make it a complete work. The first portion presented the element of space, that blessings reach all 4 seas. The second half compliments that space by referencing the element of time; that Buddhist heritages have endured more than a thousand years, ‘qian nian’. This is truly a great pairing. Fort Bend is our great county, in Texas, and Chan Cheng happens to be the nick name for this lovely city with proud history and great people. Change the cheng character with same sound, to better match the original form. This pairing is very appropriate, even in English I realize the relevance of associating the two great municipal units. We have many things in common. Both are in the south, next to the fourth largest city in the nation. One of the most respected citizens from Foshan is Wong Fey Hong, who was a great Kung Fu master, and we Texans are proud to have many cowboys. When you merge the dedication of Wong Fey Hong and the toughness of the cowboys together, what do you get? Both of these great basketball players, Tracy McGrady, and many of your beloved Rockets, live in Fort Bend County. I appreciate the hospitality and we as a delegation want to thank the host and wish you the best. |
