Copyright
Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture, review, or thesis); that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere; that its publication has been approved by all coauthors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities at the institute where the work has been carried out; that, if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication, the authors agree to automatic transfer of the copyright to the publisher; that the manuscript will not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright holders; that written permission of the copyright holder is obtained by the authors for material used from other copyrighted sources; and that any costs associated with obtaining this permission are the authors' responsibility.

Preparation of Manuscripts
The Journal strongly encourages authors to submit electronically prepared manuscripts in Word Perfect 5.1, Microsoft Word (Macintosh), or Microsoft Word (PC). Follow the instructions set forth here exactly; if, for example, the reference section is incorrectly styled, the value of the diskette submission will be reduced. Disk submission does not eliminate the requirement of submitting four hard copies of the manuscript.

Manuscripts should be typewritten or prepared on a word processor, with all material double-spaced, on one side of letter-sized paper, with suitably wide margins. All pages should be numbered consecutively, beginning with page 1, the title page. Tables and figures should be numbered serially, and legends to illustrations should be prepared on separate sheets. Tables and figures will be placed near their first mention in the text; all tables and figures must be referred to in the manuscript.

Title Page: The following elements must be included:

Title of the article;

Name(s) and initial(s) of author(s), preferably with first names spelled out;

Affiliation(s) of author(s);

Footnotes to the contribution title;

Name, address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the corresponding author.

Abstract: Each article is to be preceded by a succinct abstract, of up to 250 words, that highlights the objectives, methods, results, and conclusions of the paper.

Key Words: To identify the subjects under which the article may be indexed, 6-10 key words should be provided.

References: In the text, references to the literature should be by author and year; where there are two authors, both should be named; with three or more only the first author's name plus "et al." need be given. The list at the end of the paper should include only works mentioned in the text and should be arranged alphabetically by name of first author. References should be cited as follows:

Journal papers -- name(s) and initial(s) of author(s), year in brackets, full title, name of the journal as abbreviated in Chemical Abstracts, volume number, first and last page numbers:
Quiring R, Walldorf U, Koter U, Gehring WJ (1994) Homology of the eyeless gene of Drosophila to the small eye gene in mice and aniridia in humans. Science 265:785

Books -- name(s) of author(s), year in brackets, full title, edition, publishers, place of publication, page number:
Maizels N, Weiner AM (1993) The genomic tag hypothesis: modern viruses as fossils of ancient strategies for genomic replication. In: Gesteland RF, Atkins JF (eds) The RNA world. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, New York, pp. 577 -- 602
Li W - (1997) Molecular evolution. Sinauer Assosiates, Sunderland, MA

Responsibility for the accuracy of bibliographic references rests entirely with the author, who is requested to use as few "in press" citations as possible. In press citations must include the name of the journal that has accepted the paper.

Footnotes: Those in the text should be numbered consecutively. Footnotes to the title or authors of the article are marked by asterisks and placed on the title page.

Sequences: Sequences that are used merely as data points in statistical calculations or graphs should, if possible, be referred to by their accession numbers only. Authors should be quoted by name when their sequences are discussed individually or presented in alignments.

Illustrations: These should be suitable for reproduction, and should clarify or shorten the text. Information provided in figure legends should not be repeated in the text. Figures and graphs should always be mentioned in the text and numbered with Arabic numerals. Each figure must be labeled on its back, indicating fugure number, author name, and an indication of the top of the figure where necessary. Authors are encouraged to provide .eps or .tif files whenever possible, in addition to hard copies.

Color Figures: Color can be used without charge for the electronic edition of the journal but will appear in the printed version of the journal at the author's expense: $1150.00 per article.

Computer Software: Any software referred to among methods used must be obtainable either commercially or upon request from the authors. In submitting a manuscript to the Journal, authors accept the obligation to furnish upon request any information necessary for reproducing the methodologies on which their results are based. The methods used for preparing and analyzing alignments must be stated precisely.

Mathematical Equations: These should be clearly prepared, and annotated if necessary. Primes and dots must be called to the attention of the typesetter. Differentiate legibly between number 1, capital letter I, and lower case letter l. Use fractional exponents instead of root signs and the solidus (/) for fractions wherever their use will save vertical space. Use exp () notation when the exponent is sizable. All equations must be numbered sequentially, on the right-hand side of the column, in parenthetic Arabic numerals.

Organisms: Must be identified by their scientific binomen.
Homology: The term should not be used in the sense of structural similarity but only in its biological sense of derivation of structures from a common ancestral structure.
Abbreviations, Symbols, Units, etc.: Acronyms and symbols must be defined at first mention, in titles, abstracts, as well as within the text. For nomenclature, abbreviations, symbols, and units, authors should follow internationally accepted rules, including those adopted by the Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature.

Guidelines for Electronically Produced Illustrations for Print
Send illustrations separately from the text (i.e. files should not be integrated with the text files). Always send printouts of all illustrations.

Vector (line) Graphics

Vector graphics exported from a drawing program should be stored in EPS format.

Suitable drawing program: Adobe Illustrator. For simple line art the following drawing programs are also acceptable: Corel Draw, Freehand, Canvas.

No rules narrower than .25 pt.

No gray screens paler than 15% or darker than 60%.

Screens meant to be differentiated from one another must differ by at least 15%.

Spreadsheet/Presentation Graphics

Most presentation programs (Excel, PowerPoint, Freelance) produce data that cannot be stored in an EPS format. Therefore graphics produced by these programs cannot be used for print.

Halftone Illustrations

Black & white and color illustrations should be saved in TIFF format.

Illustrations should be created using Adobe Photoshop whenever possible.

Scans*

Scanned reproductions of black and white photographs should be provided as 300 ppi TIFF files.

Scanned color illustrations should be provided as TIFF files scanned at a minimum of 300 ppi with a 24-bit color depth.

Line art should be provided as TIFF files at 600 ppi.

* We do prefer having the original art as our printers have drum scanners which allow for better reproduction of critical medical halftones.

Graphics from Videos

Separate files should be prepared for frames from a video that are to be printed in the journal. When preparing these files you should follow the same rules as listed under Halftone Illustrations.

Guidelines for Electronically Produced Illustrations for ONLINE

Quicktime (.mov) is the preferred format, but .rm, .avi, .mpg, etc. are acceptable.

No video file should be larger than 2MB. To decrease the size of your file, consider changing one or more of the following variables: frame speed, number of colors/greys, viewing size (in pixels), or compression. Video is subject to Editorial review and approval.

Appendices and Supplementary Material
Authors who wish to publish electronic supplementary material to their article (Excel files, images, audio/video files) are requested to submit their manuscript via our online submission system, with a note in the author comments box that supplementary material will be submitted separately by email. This email, containing the supplementary material, should be sent to the Production Editor. In the email, the title of the submitted manuscript as well as the name of the corresponding author should be given.   Print version

The Journal of Evolutionary Biology is a bimonthly, peer-reviewed, international journal. It covers both micro- and macro-evolution of all types of organisms. The aim of the Journal is to integrate perspectives across molecular and microbial evolution, behaviour, genetics, ecology, life histories, development, palaeontology, systematics and morphology. To fulfil its integrative role, the Journal gives preference to papers that bring together two or more fields. The Journal seeks a balance, even a tension, between theory and data. The Editorial Board reflects the multidisciplinary role of the Journal and its international focus.

Full instructions for preparing and submitting manuscripts online are provided at the submission site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jeb. Please do not duplicate your submission by submitting online and by post.

Manuscript categories
Journal of Evolutionary Biology publishes ordinary Research Articles (typically 6-10 printed pages), Short Communications (typically 3-5 pages; results and discussion may be combined), Review Articles (also short "Mini Reviews" and Target Reviews. The latter are typically commissioned and authors should contact the Reviews Editor before submitting one. Manuscripts in all categories include an abstract.

Submission and handling of manuscripts
Manuscripts are handled by Editor in Chief, Reviews Editor or one of the Deciding Editors. Manuscripts arc typically reviewed by two members of the Editorial Board, although occasionally external reviewers are asked for expert advice on specialized topics.

Journal of Evolutionary Biology strongly encourages online submission of manuscripts at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jeb. Submission online enables the quickest possible review and online manuscript tracking. Manuscripts can be submitted online as a Word (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf) document. Each of these file formats will be automatically converted to PDF for reviewing. Please upload the entire manuscript, with figures, tables and supplementary material as one file.

Full upload instructions and support are available online from the submission site via the 'Get Help Now' button. You can also email for online Submission support.

Hardcopy submission of the manuscripts is also possible (accompanied by the electronic version on disk or CD in one of the above formats). Note that papers (manuscript, figures, etc.) will not be returned to authors. Address for hardcopy material:

Online production tracking is now available for your article through Blackwell's Author Services.  This enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production so they do not need to contact the production editor to check on progress. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.

Presentation of manuscripts
Manuscripts should be written in clear, concise, and grammatically correct English; manuscripts that are inadequately prepared will he returned to the authors. Manuscripts submitted by non-native English speakers must be thoroughly corrected by a native English speaker prior to submission. Manuscripts should be typewritten in double-spacing on one side of 297 mm x 210 mm (ll inch x 8.5 inch) white paper, with 2.5 cm (1 inch) margins on all sides. All pages should be numbered consecutively, and line numbers should be printed on each page to facilitate ease of reference for reviewers. Please indicate the word count of the full text, excluding abstract, references, tables and figure legends, in the accompanying covering letter.

Length of the manuscripts: Manuscripts should not typically exceed 10 printed pages (including figures and tables). In general, allow 900 words per printed page and subtract 160 words for each figure and table. More lengthy papers will be considered for publication if authors agree paying page charges in excess of 10 printed pages (£75 per extra page). Members of European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB) can waive these charges.

Title page: The title page should contain the article title, full name(s) of author(s), affiliation(s), a short running title (abbreviated form of title) less than 45 characters including spaces, and the name and complete mailing address (including telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address of the person to whom correspondence should be sent.

Abstract page: The abstract page should contain a short summary not exceeding 150 words and include up to 10 keywords.

Main text
The organization of the main text should be chosen to fit the work reported. All papers should begin with an introduction that describes why the work is important and end with a discussion of the significance of the results and their relation to other work. The following format is recommended for empirical studies:
(1) lntroduction. The introduction should summarise briefly the background and aims, and end with a very brief statement of what has been achieved by the work.
(2) Materials and methods. This section should contain sufficient detail so that all procedures can be repeated (in conjunction with cited references).
(3) Results. The Results section should present the experiments that support the conclusions to be drawn later in the Discussion. The Results Section should conform to a high standard of rigour. Extended lines of inference, arguments or speculations should not he placed in the Results.
(4) Discussion. The Discussion section should he separate from the Results section. It allows authors to propose their interpretation of the results, and to suggest what they might mean in a wider context. It should end with a clear statement of the main conclusions of the research, and a clear explanation of their importance and relevance.
(5) Acknowledgements. The acknowledgments (e.g.. of financial support) should be brief.
(6) References. References to papers by up to two authors in the text should be in full, e.g.. (Able & Charles, 1986). If the number of authors exceeds two, they should always be abbreviated thus: (Frank et al., 1986). When different groups of authors with the same first author and date occur, they should be cited thus: (James et al., 1986a,b). References should be listed in chronological order in the text, e.g.. (Lowe et al., 1986; Able et al., 1997). At the end of the paper, references should be listed in alphabetical order. Names and initials of all authors, year of publication, the full titles of papers, chapters and books, the abbreviated names of journals, volumes and inclusive pagination should he provided. Examples of reference style arc given below:

Smith, D. R., Crespi, B. J. & Bookstein, F. L. 1997. Fluctuating asymmetry in the honey bee, Apis mellifera: effects of ploidy and hybridization. J. Evol. Biol. 10: 551-574.

Ridley, M. 1996. Evolution, 2nd edn. Blackwell Science, Oxford.

References to a paper 'in press' are permissible provided that it has been accepted for publication (documentary evidence of acceptance must be provided) and should appear as follows:

Wolf, J.O. 1997. J. Anim. Ecol, in press

A reference to 'unpublished work' is only permissible if it concerns essential information; it should be available from the cited authors on request, and the names of all persons involved should he given; any person cited as the source of a 'personal communication' must have approved the reference; both of these types of citation are permitted in the text only, not in the list of references. The use of 'in preparation' or 'submitted for publication' is not permitted.

References to material available on the World Wide Web can be given, but only if the information is available on an official site and without charge to readers. Authors may provide electronic copies of the cited material for inclusion on the Journal of Evolutionary Biology Homepage at the discretion of the Editors. The format for citations is as follows:

Beckleheimer, J. 1994. How do you cite URL's in a bibliography? See http://www.nrlsscnavy.mil/bibliography.html

An EndNote style file is available (Click Here). Right-click on the link and select 'save target as'. Navigate to your EndNote styles folder and save.

We have endeavoured to make this style file as comprehensive as possible, but complex or unusual reference types and variations in reference data quality in EndNote may result in missing information or formatting problems. If you have any comments or suggestions for improvement, please contact the journal Production Editor at: jeb@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com

Submitting electronic files
Accepted manuscripts will be published from the electronic version wherever practicable and must also be provided in this form at the revision stage. The material can be submitted online, on disk or CDR and should be accompanied by a covering letter specifying manuscript number, operating system and software program. Please submit the first version of a manuscript as one single file, including figures, tables and appendices. Separate figure files may be required once the manuscript is accepted.

Text
Files should be formatted double-spaced with no hyphenation and automatic wordwrap (no hard returns within paragraphs). Please type your text consistently, e.g.. take care to distinguish between '1 (one) and 'I' (lower-case L), and "0" (zero) and "O" (capital O), etc. (if nonstandard fonts are used (e.g. symbols, greek letters) they should be embedded in the word-processor file. Please number each page and activate line numbering in your text file.

Tables
Tables should be typed as text, using 'tabs'. The use of graphics programs and 'table editors' should he avoided.

Electronic artwork
We would like to receive your artwork in electronic form. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated postscript Format (EPS), and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format(TIFF). Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available on the BPL Homepage at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/illustration.asp

Specifications

Tables
Tables should he cited consecutively in the text and numbered with Arabic numerals (Table 1, Table 2, etc.). Each table should be titled and typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. Units must be clearly indicated for each of the entries in the table. Footnotes to tables should be identified by the symbols *ʈ¤¦ (in that order) and placed at the bottom of the table. No vertical rules should be used.

Figures
Figures should be cited consecutively in the text by Arabic numerals (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc.). Title, and legends, should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. All figures should be submitted in such a form as to permit reproduction without retouching or redrawing. Line drawings should be professionally drawn, or generated by high-resolution computer graphics, on paper no larger than that used for typing the text. Lettering on the figures should be of good quality and of a size that allows fur eventual reduction of the figures. Glossy prints, as rich in contrast as possible, or half-tone figures (photographs) should be provided.

Scientific names
Give the Latin names of each species in full, together with the authority for its name, at first mention in the main text. If there are many species, cite a flora or checklist which may be consulted for authorities instead of listing them in the text. Do not give authorities for species cited from published references. Give priority to scientific names in the text (with colloquial names in parentheses if desired).

Units and symbols
Authors are requested to use the International System of Units (SI, Systme International d'UnitŽs) where possible for all measurements (see Quantities, Units and Symbols, 2nd edn., 1975, The Royal Society, London). Note that mathematical expressions should contain symbols not abbreviations. If the paper contains many symbols, it is recommended that they should be defined as early in the text as possible, or within a subsection of the Materials and Methods section. In-line equations should be typed as text. The use of graphics programs and 'equation editors' should be avoided. Displayed equations will normally be re-keyed by our typesetter.

Web materials

Supplementary material can be published as electronic appendices on the journal homepage at the Editors' discretion. This may include information e.g. on sampling locations, data underlying analyses or figures, additional analyses not presented in the manuscript, or relevant multimedia files (e.g. mating song audio clips).

Supplementary material guidelines for authors are available at: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/suppmat.asp

Statistical results
In-line statistical results should be presented as test-statistics, degrees of freedom as subscript(s) to test-statistics (e.g. F1,1 2=... or t 8=...), P < 0.001, P < 0.05, P = value (for values in between 0.05 and 1.0), e.g. (F1,12 = 4.9, P < 0.05). Since exact P-vales can be useful for meta-analyses, we recommend that these are quoted even when not significant. However, non-significant (P > 0.05) results should be always quoted as being such (e.g. p=0.78. Statistical results in tables should comprehensive, allowing future meta-analyses. Depending on the details of the analyses.

Page charges and colour figures
There are charges for:
(a) non-ESEB members: every page in excess of the maximum length of 10 printed pages (£75 + VAT for each additional page),
(b) changes in the proofs not due to the printer's or editorial errors,
(c) equations in excess of 20 lines per article (does not apply to supplemental electronic material), and
(d) colour figures (does not apply to supplemental electronic material).
It is the policy of the Journal of Evolutionary Biology for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork, except in the case of Review Articles for which these charges are waived. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your Research Article or Short Communication when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF from the internet. The web address for the form is: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/sn_sub2000_x_cow.pdf.  If you are unable to access the internet or are unable to download the form, please contact the Production Editor (jeb@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com) and they will be able to email or FAX a form to you. Any article received by Blackwell Publishing with colour work will not be published until the form has been returned.
Author material archive policy
Please note that unless specifically requested, Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hardcopy or electronic material submitted two months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the editorial office or production editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so.

Proofs and offprints
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author via email as an Acrobat PDF file. Only corrections and essential changes should be made at this stage. Authors will be charged for extensive alterations.

To avoid delay in publication, corrected proofs shoud be returned to the Production Editor within three working days of receipt.

The Editors reserve the right to make minor modifications to manuscripts that do not conform to accepted standards/Journal style. Such alterations will always be submitted to the authors for approval at the proof stage.

A PDF offprint of the online published article will be provided free of charge to the corresponding author, and may be distributed subject to the Publisher's terms and conditions. Paper offprints of the printed published article may be purchased if ordered via the method stipulated on the instructions that will accompany the proofs. Printed offprints are posted to the correspondence address given for the paper unless a different address is specified when ordered. Note that it is not uncommon for printed offprints to take up to eight weeks to arrive after publication of the journal.

Online early
The Journal of Evolutionary Biology is covered by Blackwell Publishing's Online Early service. Online Early articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of the publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Online Early articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Online Early articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Online Early articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.

Exclusive Licence

Authors will be required to sign an exclusive licence form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the exclusive licence form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the author warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned.) After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here

Online Open

OnlineOpen is a pay-to-publish service from Blackwell that offers authors whose papers are accepted for publication the opportunity to pay up-front for their manuscript to become open access (i.e. free for all to view and download) via the Blackwell Synergy website. Each OnlineOpen article will be subject to a one-off fee of £1250 (equivalent to ó1850 or $2500) to be met by or on behalf of the Author in advance of publication. Upon online publication, the article (both full-text and PDF versions) will be available to all for viewing and download free of charge. The print version of the article will also be branded as OnlineOpen and will draw attention to the fact that the paper can be downloaded for free via the Blackwell Synergy service.

Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the combined payment and copyright licence form available here

(Please note this form is for use with OnlineOpen material ONLY.)

Once complete this form should be sent to the Production Editor along with the rest of the manuscript materials at the time of acceptance or as soon as possible after that (preferably within 24 hours to avoid any delays in processing). Do not inform the Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen before acceptance.

Free online access to this journal is available within institutions in the developing world through the HINARI initiative with the World Health Organization (WHO), the AGORA initiative with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the OARE Initiative (Online Access to Research in the Environment) with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Additional material

Submission to Journal of Evolutionary Biology implies that the authors are prepared to distribute freely (or at a nominal price) to academic researchers for their own use any materials (i.e. strains, clones, antibodies, etc.) used in the experiments described. The editors and publisher of this journal expect authors to make the data underlying published articles available. An investigator who feels that reasonable requests have not been met by the authors should correspond with the Editor-in-Chief. Authors must use the appropriate database to deposit detailed information supplementing submitted papers, and quote the accession number in their manuscripts.

A  Page Charge Form must also be completed and returned to the addresses on the forms for all articles accepted for publication in the journal. There are no page charges for ESEB members, but a form must be submitted indicating your membership status nevertheless.

A File Description Form must be completed for all electronic submission of manuscripts.

Please note: papers that are narrow in scope, and/or address an issue from a circumscribed taxonomically-oriented view rather than emphasise general evolutionary issues, are liable to editorial rejection.

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution的文章归属范围
Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution is dedicated to bringing Darwin's dream - to "have fairly true genealogical trees of each great kingdom of Nature" - within grasp. The journal provides a forum for molecular studies that advance our understanding of phylogeny and evolution.

This journal plays an important role by publishing the results of molecular studies that identify the actual clades to which different species and higher taxa belong. Such knowledge will further the development of phylogenetically more accurate taxonomic classifications and ultimately lead to a unified classification for all the ramifying lines of life.

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution publishes high-quality papers that result from or encourage the collaboration of molecular biologists and computer scientists with the community of systematic and evolutionary biologists. In addition, the journal presents new findings on or insights into evolutionary processes and mechanisms as expressed at the molecular level, as well as papers that deal with the methodology of reconstructing evolutionary history from molecular data (such as papers that describe new or more powerful computer algorithms for constructing phylogenetic trees from homologous
