Page charges and colour figures There are charges for: (a) non-ESEB members: every page in excess of the maximum length of 10 printed pages (£75 + VAT for each additional page), (b) changes in the proofs not due to the printer's or editorial errors, (c) equations in excess of 20 lines per article (does not apply to supplemental electronic material), and (d) colour figures (does not apply to supplemental electronic material). It is the policy of the Journal of Evolutionary Biology for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork, except in the case of Review Articles for which these charges are waived. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your Research Article or Short Communication when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF from the internet. The web address for the form is: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/sn_sub2000_x_cow.pdf. If you are unable to access the internet or are unable to download the form, please contact the Production Editor (jeb@oxon.blackwellpublishing.com) and they will be able to email or FAX a form to you. Any article received by Blackwell Publishing with colour work will not be published until the form has been returned. Author material archive policy Please note that unless specifically requested, Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hardcopy or electronic material submitted two months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the editorial office or production editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so. Proofs and offprints Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author via email as an Acrobat PDF file. Only corrections and essential changes should be made at this stage. Authors will be charged for extensive alterations. To avoid delay in publication, corrected proofs shoud be returned to the Production Editor within three working days of receipt. The Editors reserve the right to make minor modifications to manuscripts that do not conform to accepted standards/Journal style. Such alterations will always be submitted to the authors for approval at the proof stage. A PDF offprint of the online published article will be provided free of charge to the corresponding author, and may be distributed subject to the Publisher's terms and conditions. Paper offprints of the printed published article may be purchased if ordered via the method stipulated on the instructions that will accompany the proofs. Printed offprints are posted to the correspondence address given for the paper unless a different address is specified when ordered. Note that it is not uncommon for printed offprints to take up to eight weeks to arrive after publication of the journal. Online early The Journal of Evolutionary Biology is covered by Blackwell Publishing's Online Early service. Online Early articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of the publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Online Early articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Online Early articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Online Early articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article. Exclusive Licence Authors will be required to sign an exclusive licence form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the exclusive licence form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the author warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned.) After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here Online Open OnlineOpen is a pay-to-publish service from Blackwell that offers authors whose papers are accepted for publication the opportunity to pay up-front for their manuscript to become open access (i.e. free for all to view and download) via the Blackwell Synergy website. Each OnlineOpen article will be subject to a one-off fee of £1250 (equivalent to ó1850 or $2500) to be met by or on behalf of the Author in advance of publication. Upon online publication, the article (both full-text and PDF versions) will be available to all for viewing and download free of charge. The print version of the article will also be branded as OnlineOpen and will draw attention to the fact that the paper can be downloaded for free via the Blackwell Synergy service. Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the combined payment and copyright licence form available here (Please note this form is for use with OnlineOpen material ONLY.) Once complete this form should be sent to the Production Editor along with the rest of the manuscript materials at the time of acceptance or as soon as possible after that (preferably within 24 hours to avoid any delays in processing). Do not inform the Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen before acceptance. The copyright statement for OnlineOpen authors will read: (c) [date] The Author(s) Journal compilation (c) [date] European Society for Evolutionary Biology/Blackwell Publishing Ltd Free Access in the Developing World Free online access to this journal is available within institutions in the developing world through the HINARI initiative with the World Health Organization (WHO), the AGORA initiative with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the OARE Initiative (Online Access to Research in the Environment) with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Additional material Submission to Journal of Evolutionary Biology implies that the authors are prepared to distribute freely (or at a nominal price) to academic researchers for their own use any materials (i.e. strains, clones, antibodies, etc.) used in the experiments described. The editors and publisher of this journal expect authors to make the data underlying published articles available. An investigator who feels that reasonable requests have not been met by the authors should correspond with the Editor-in-Chief. Authors must use the appropriate database to deposit detailed information supplementing submitted papers, and quote the accession number in their manuscripts. A Page Charge Form must also be completed and returned to the addresses on the forms for all articles accepted for publication in the journal. There are no page charges for ESEB members, but a form must be submitted indicating your membership status nevertheless. A File Description Form must be completed for all electronic submission of manuscripts. Please note: papers that are narrow in scope, and/or address an issue from a circumscribed taxonomically-oriented view rather than emphasise general evolutionary issues, are liable to editorial rejection. |
