Title Post-Doctoral Categories Post-Doctoral Organization Department of Biology,. University of Utah Location Salt Lake City, Utah Website http://biologylabs.utah.edu/coley/ Contact kursar@biology.utah.edu Job Information Postdoctoral position, October 11, 2011: The Kursar/Coley lab studies the ecology of tropical plants and is looking for a Ph.D. chemist. The person will be responsible for analysis of the secondary metabolites of multiple species in a genus of tropical tree, Inga, in a project funded by NSF. The metabolites include non-protein amino acids, saponins and a highly diverse array of phenolics. The ideal candidate would have experience in two fields, metabolomics (especially LC-MS) and natural products chemistry (including structure elucidation using NMR and MS), an excellent record of publication, and a demonstrated willingness to work as a team and to co-supervise graduate students and undergraduates. Because the divergence of defenses among related species of Inga appears to be key for understanding speciation and coexistence, two long-standing, unresolved issues in tropical biology, the ideal candidate also would have a demonstrated interest in the biological issues, specifically the evolutionary or ecological aspects of natural products (chemical ecology). Experience in chemoinformatics, data management, and the development of databases will be valuable but not essential.
