Abstract
Magnets play an important role in our everyday life in a variety of ways beyond holding photos on the refrigerator door. Computer hard drives,MP3 players, iPods, credit cards, electric motors, audio speakers, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines used in hospitals, are all examples ofdevices that rely on magnetism. When the size of a magnet is reduced to thenanoscale, its properties can be drastically different and often improved due to confinement effects. Nanomagnets have great potential for enhancing existing technologies such as magnetic storage media and magnetic sensors.Nanomagnets may also find new applications in biomedicine and spintronic devices. Spintronics is another name for the emerging field of magnetic electronics, or spin electronics, which exploits not only the charge of the electron but also its spin. It is the property of spin that is responsible for magnetism. Nanomagnetism is presently an exciting and active area of research as there are many basic questions to be answered before nanomagnets can be exploited to their full potential. At the same time, there are already technologies on the market that employ nano-scale magnets, for example, magneto-resistive read heads in computer hard drives, and other devices are actively being developed, such as, magnetic random access memory or MRAM, which will lead to “instant on” computers. This seminar will provide an overview, directed towards the nonexpert, of techniques employed to fabricate nanomagnets, the tools used to characterize them, and their relevance to technology.
