One of the major growth areas in contemporary research, is the study of surfaces. 'Surface science' spans the traditional disciplines of chemistry and physics—on the one hand it may be applied to the problems of chemisorption and catalysis, and on the other to the properties of semiconductor, surfaces, but these are only two examples from the many potential applications of this field of research. Despite the enormous importance of any insights which may be gained in surface behaviour, the study of surfaces progressed slowly until very recently due to experimental difficulties. Impjoyements in vacuum technology and the development of appropriate analytical techniques during the 1960s provided the impetus for a rapid expansion in the field, and as a consequence many hundreds of laboratories throughout the world are now equipped to undertake fundamental studies of surfaces on an atomic scale.
The information attainable from surface studies can be divided roughly into geometrical and electronic, but the interpretation of the latter frequently (requires a knowledge of the former. Low-energy electron diffraction or LEED is probably, the-best-known technique available for obtaining geometrical information, and its similarities, to X-ray diffraction have led to its adoption as the basis for the new science of 'surface crystallography'. Although numerous other techniques have been recently proposed which may provide information concerning the geometrical arrangement of atoms at a crystal surface, none have been studied as widely as LEED, and it is LEED which has usually provided the information by which other techniques are judged.
