However, the PDF obtained by powder diffraction is simply a Fourier-transform of the structure function, S(Q) and thus the PDF carries no less information than the powder diffraction pattern. Consequently it gives only a spatially averaged picture of the structure, and local variations in the structure are not correctly represented. The x-ray anomalous scattering is useful only when the energy of the absorption edge is sufficiently high to allow a large Q range, so that it can be applied only to relatively heavy elements.
