To assess the state of the art and pinpoint future challenges, needs, and research priorities, 2. To highlight the fundamental scientific opportunities in this field, 3. To consider the impact of materials science on society, and vice versa, 4. To find the best ways of attracting more students to the field and ensure high-quality education, 5. To provide guidelines for science policy makers and to offer a basis for fundamental materials science programmes in Europe.
