Methanotrophic bacteria are being used to degrade a mixture of trichloroethylene (TCE) and chloroform (CF) by cometabolism. Here, the enzyme methane monooxygenase (MMO) initiates the oxidation of these two compounds. Since they compete with one another for MMO, the rate of their degradation in the mixture is governed by competitive inhibition kinetics. Under the following conditions and with Xa = 120 mg/L, estimate the individual rates of transformation of TCE and CF in mg/L/d. STCE = 6.4 mg TCE/L qTCE = 0.84 g TCE/g VSSa/d KTCE = 1.5 mg TCE/L SCF = 5 mg CF/L qCF = 0.34 g CF/g VSSa/d KCF = 1.3 mg CF/L Assume Ki for each substrate equals its respective K value. |
