This book is designed to critically review experimental findings onionic polymers and colloidal particles and to prove a theoreticalframework based on the Poisson-Boltzmann approach. Structure formationin ionic polymer solutions has attracted attention since the days of H.Staudinger and J. D. Bernal. An independent study on ionic colloidaldispersions with microscopy provided a compelling evidence of structureformation. Recent technical developments have made it possible toaccumulate relevant information for both ionic polymers and colloidalparticles in dilute systems. The outstanding phenomenon experimentallyfound is microscopic inhomogeneity in the solute distribution inmacroscopically homogeneous systems.To account for the observation, thepresent authors have invoked the existence of the counterion-mediatedattraction between similarly charged solute species, in addition to thewidely accepted electrostatic repulsion.
