The photovoltaic (PV) industry has experienced an astonishing growth in the last decade, and more concisely in the last 5 years, where the growth has been exponential. As an example, the global PV module shipments have increased from 1049.8 MWP in 2005 to 17402.3 MWP in 2010, which represents an annual growth of 65% in the mentioned period。 Despite its long history, crystalline silicon technology still dominates clearly the market in front of younger technologies. Only last year, the 87% of these PV modules corresponded to crystalline silicon. Although its suitability is well known, the limiting factors of this technology are also well defined.

光电产业在过去十年中经历了迅猛的发展,更准确的说,在过去五年内成长是指数上升的。举例来说,全球的光电模块运输从2005年的1049.8MWP增加到2010年的17402.3MWP,这就有每年百分之六十五的年增长率。尽管经历很久时间,但硅晶技术始终在市场内比其他新兴技术有明显优势。仅在去年,百分之八十七的光电模块就由硅晶制造。尽管其兼容性众所周知,但这项技术的瓶颈也十分明显。
