The main caveat of the present study is that all the seahorses studied were genetically related. Therefore, our results on one batch of siblings are not directly transferable on a broad scale to either wild populations or tank-bred individuals produced from genetically diverse broodstock. In seahorses at birth, initial size, growth rate and survival vary between broods and are influenced by the size of the male parent (Dzyuba et al., 2006; Lin et al., 2008). Our results, however, do offer an insight into the rearing, growth, maturation and reproduction of a seahorse species considered to be difficult to culture at the juvenile stage (Olivotto et al., 2008). This is in contrast to adult seahorses, who can readily mate and reproduce in captivity (pers. obs.; see alsoWoods, 2000; Dzyuba et al., 2006; Lin et al., 2008; Planas et al., 2008, among many other studies), and to juveniles released by males, who are often relatively large (Foster and Vincent, 2004; Lourie et al., 2004; Rosa et al., 2005; present study) and already able to immediately feed exogenously (e.g., Sheng et al., 2006).
