Responsive Polymers in Biology and Technology

The invention of new materials with unique physicochemical and biological characteristics has been an integral part of synthetic strategies adopted by scientists and technologists for the last few decades. Among various materials designed to cater to the different indus-trial and domestic needs, polymer materials owe a prime position in modern biomaterials research because of their close resemblance to biological systems. The macromolecular architectures which largely respond to minor changes in external signals are often coined as “responsive polymers” and have emerged as one of the most studied systems in recent years. In living systems the cellular functions are regulated by biomacromolecules that re-spond to changes in local physiological environment and thus form the basis around which all major natural processes are controlled. Many synthetic polymers that exhibit a similar type of responsive behavior can thus be considered as biomimetic and they play a key role in emerging “smart” applications in biology and medicine.[ 来自科研家族 高分子家族 ] |
