Molecular spin clusters continue to attract attention due to their potential applications in quantum computation, 1 magnetic refrigeration, 2 molecular spintronics 3 and as nanoscale magnets. 4 We have a long-standing interest in the synthesis of Ni(II) and Co(II) spin clusters using multidentate ligands. 5 Both Ni(II) and Co(II) ions are good candidates to generate spin clusters that display slow magnetic relaxation, i.e. single-molecule magnets (SMMs). 6,7 This is because both Ni(II) and Co(II) centres can display a large single-ion zero-field splitting (ZFS). 8,9 Bis-tris propane { 2,2¢-(propane-1,3-diyldiimino)bis[2- (hydroxymethyl)propane-1,3-diol], H 6 L, Scheme 1 } contains multiple binding sites and hence, excellent potential as a bridging ligand, although its main use is as a biological buffer. However, its use in cluster chemistry is rare. 10 Herein we report a Ni 4 cubane and a Co 5 complex that displays an unusual Co–O core topology. These represent the first Bis-tris propane-based complexes containing these metal ions: both complexes display ferromagnetic interactions leading to non-zero spin ground states for each cluster. |
