The eigenvalues of the equation i.e. the complex angles of wave incidence is obtained by genetic algorithm(GA). Then the electromagnetic fields in the waveguide are calculated. For perfectly conducting earth and perfectly reflecting ionosphere there is a gap between the numerical method of GA and the analytical method especially for higher modes. The simulation trails show that the GA method has a higher accuracy than the analytical method within 1000km where the minimum field strength appears in the distance of about 500km from transmitter. The fields calculated from it have a closer approximation to the actual data so it can be used to predict the field strength of VLF waves in the propagation if the influence of atmospheric noise is not considered. © 2011 IEEE. When flare angle becomes broader firstly the resonant frequencies move towards the lower band which means that narrower flare angle benefits to antenna miniaturization; secondly the input impedance level becomes smoother and the minimum reflected coefficient becomes smaller and moves to higher resonant frequencies which means that broader flare angle benefits to radiation in higher frequencies; last the radiation pattern becomes more similar between each other. In brief variation in the flare angle brings about contradiction between miniaturization and radiation ability of the antenna. A compromise between mechanical property and electric performance should be adopted in antenna applications. © 2010 IEEE.
