摘要：
Catalysis is a science relying on many disciplines. The advent of industrial catalytic technologies in the last century has, most often, resulted from a sequential interaction between chemists and chemical engineers, both communities developing their own fundamental and applied sciences, i.e., a multidisciplinary process. Some of the major lessons learned in the past century, and related achievements, are illustrated and discussed. Challenges for catalysis research in the 21st century are identified, based on the current knowledge of catalysis researchers, recent fundamental and applied
developments, and current or long-term objectives of the global chemical industry.

Eric G. Derouane received his MSc in Chemistry from Princeton
University and his Dr.Sc. from the University of Liège. Since 1995,he has been the Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Innovative Catalysis at the University of Liverpool. His research interests comprise molecular sieve synthesis,confinement catalysis in zeolites, alkane activation, the
development of in situ techniques for catalytic studies, and combinatorial catalysis. His work has been recognized by the Ciapetta Lectureship of the North American Catalysis Society (1981), the Catalysis Lectureship of the Société
Chimique de France (1993), and by the 1994 Francqui Prize (Belgium). He is a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Molecular Catalysis, and an Editor of CATTECH. He is also an advisor and consultant to several companies worldwide.
