Checklists and rubrics were used to identify commonalities and behavioral patterns.
There was a small element of quantitative data analysis that used system benchmarking and testing. Data was collected to the spreadsheet and later analyzed as a graph. The two approaches should be regarded as complementary rather than competitive. Understanding in qualitative research is therefore more parallel to the understanding gained from an art, rather than from a science. This does not mean that it is an inferior kind of understanding, but it does mean that it is different, because it required active participation of the reader to identify with the situation and relate the findings to his/her own situation. Qualitative analysis of the available data was focused to capture the richness of people's experience in their own terms. It strived to understand the meaning that emerges from in-depth analysis of detailed descriptions and verbatim quotations.  Qualitative responses were longer, more detailed and analysis is difficult because responses are neither systematic nor standardized. The open-ended response permitted the researcher to understand the world as seen by the respondent.
