ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people." Do people's appearance and behaviors effectively reveal society's ideas and values, as the statement contents? Although I agree that under certain circumstance the way people look, dress and act reflects their attitudes and their society's values, the speaker fails to account for the fact that in some respects how people look, dress, and act can belie their genuine attitudes, ideas and values. Admittedly, it is a quite easy for us to know a society's values and ideas through the way its people look, dress, and act. First consider the way people look and dress. A society whose members prefer to ready-made, inexpensive clothing reveals that it places more emphasis on saving than spending. And a society whose members are inclined to wear clothing that is traditional and conservative is most likely the one that values tradition over modernization. In addition, if the members of a society dress formally and uniformly, then the society may pay great attention to religious practice or have a low value on personal pleasure. On the contrary, if people's clothing is colorful, diverse and casual, the society is one that really wants to be free. Next turning to the way people act. For example, a society whose members show great respect to others and have a strong confidence is one which values human dignity and equality, while a society of people who act in a hateful manner toward others clearly reveals that it has little tolerance of different beliefs and opinions. Moreover, people's preference of over-consumption reflects the society enjoys luxurious and convenient lives. But if people especially give praise to hard working, the society may lay a high value on thriftiness and persistence. However, when we lay more emphasis on the significance of the way people look, dress and act to a society, we must realize that we should not count on it to reveal a society's ideas and values thoroughly. In other words, how people look, dress and act may mask their authentic opinions and attitudes due to certain reasons. For instance, the office clerks often dress formally and uniformly, which shows that they do not emphasize personality. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily the case. It is external regulations that prevent them from dress distinctively. Another example in point is the appearance of politicians. More often than not, they intentionally wear formal clothing such as business suit in order to maintain a positive image in the face of the populace and strengthen their confidence. Furthermore, the statement the speaker holds ignores the fact that we could not have a deep understanding of a society’s ideas and values only through the ways people look, dress and act. A society’s value system is wholly based on the time-tested beliefs, values and opinions that have been accepted by generations. So it is quite difficult for us to know the basic social values just from first glance, which may mislead us. Not only is sufficient time needed, but also the study of habits and customs of a country is needed at greater demand. Only through this way can we know a society’s ideas and values profoundly and thoroughly. To sum up, the way people look, dress and act is a significant symbol of a society’s ideas and values. Under certain circumstance, it can help us to understand the values of a society. Nevertheless, the habits and customs, accurate indicators of social values, should not be neglected. |
