The defects in my prose

I have said I knew what need to be improved in my prose before, and today I’d like to talk about this. I guess you guys do not know what a nice prose really requires. But this isn’t the issue I’m going to get involved in now since it is a more complicated one than could be explained in a short prose. So I will pick the easier one for you in discussing my own prose. Certainly I’m not going to pay much attention on grammar or words. What I will concentrate on are some more advanced skills you need to keep in mind when do your writings. One skill is reasonable syntax change when you are trying to explain something in details. There are mainly four kinds of syntaxes, namely declarative, interrogative, interjectional, and complex. Using only certain kind of syntax will make your prose dull and tiresome. So you should learn to change freely from one kind to another. But don’t try to be showy on your understanding of syntax and change it whenever you want to or you will find your prose too “tragic” to read. Then come to some useful expressions the native speakers prefer. These expressions will certainly earn you much appreciation if you managed to use them correctly. Sometimes you can also choose them in place of the words that you can’t come up with when you’re writing. Besides you also have to distinguish what’s informal from what’s formal since you should know your readers’ requirements well. What’s popular in a casual speech can never be employed in a serious occasion in writing. The next will be coherence between different paragraphs. You’ve got to manage the hole passage when you are writing, a clear clue of what would be discussed in the next paragraph would gain your prose lots of attraction to readers. But it’s not so easy for us to know how important it could be when you are doing this intentionally. As the native speakers see, most of our prose or compositions would be incoherent and they do not catch what we are arguing for! That’s the culture difference and we needn’t to be surprised. The last and the most important is rhetoric. The conception of rhetoric in English is different from what we’ve already known in Chinese-learning. In fact, all those mentioned above could be classified as one item of rhetoric. But it contains much more than those. Take metaphor for example, you’ll find your prose much nicer with some metaphors following western logic. For further studying, you can refer to some more professional works on this topic.
