[交流] English-learning — I’m not an expert

English-learning — I’m not an expert
   Eric Wesley
Although I have won fame in English-learning among my former classmates, I’m not the best one. Someone else did even better than me! They got high marks and won prizes, me not. But I’m always interested in something beyond learning and memorizing the facts. It’s partially because I’m not so good at memorizing anything and nor did I have the perseverance in forcing me into this! I’m a little too lazy and cannot go on without any fun. But as a fun seeker, I will never stop seeking. So how could something else be such fun and useful in one’s life than exploring a language? It gives us another way in thinking of something, it helps us to understand the whole world better, it makes you feel even more confident, it also adds colors to your life. So why wouldn’t you and me start to love it and benefit from it?

A lot of people do not believe in what I’m saying because of their continuous failure in English-learning. Of course I certainly do not know what may have contributed to this frustrating result. But I do know one thing for sure that is you have kept telling yourself you’re never going to make it. You do not even know what you really need and you’re only learning English after the requirements from different kinds of examinations. The one who owns this attitude will never go far enough in English-learning to reach the happy-learning level. They will keep themselves bothered by the poor knowledge of English and can’t find the way out.

So what should you do to change your present unsatisfying situation in English-learning? Yes, attitude! The most important thing is attitude. Don’t be distracted by something else less important while you’re working out your own plan! Time is no problem so is your perseverance. Do not tell me you have difficulties in focusing or you’re easily quitting! No excuse for this since you’re not 8 years old. I suggest you not to believe in someone else’s experiencing talk include what I’m telling you right now. Try to duplicate their success will make you lose yourself and become more frustrated. What you need to do is to find your own way.

What’s your own way? I don’t know either. But what I do know at present is it is going to be a unique one again nobody is going to duplicate it. Maybe you’ll be encouraged by Li Yang, the Crazy English establisher although he is not my idol. Maybe you’ll find yourself falling in love with the English culture and make up your mind to gain a good knowledge of English. Who knows! But I have another word for you: persist. No matter which way you’ll choose, it’s going to be fine if your just persist. But if you are not so strong-willed or you have no idea what you are learning English really for, then try some search engines to find out the answers to your confusion. I did benefit a lot from internet while I was going through some difficult time in my way to my present level. There you can find many ways, and one of them possibly would fit you and become your choice.

And then, along with your progress in learning, you’ll be surprised by what you’ve discovered by accident. There’s still more waiting for you! You cannot help going on for further exploring! You suddenly know where your weakness lies, you need improvement, and you just want to reach perfection! That’s the feeling of love towards something. And from then on, you’re never driven by something from the outside world, on the contrary, you have reached in your deep soul and find what you need really. That’s exactly the way our Chinese understand something since the education we have received contains not so much on this issue. We focus too much on certain things instead of ourselves so that most of us haven’t got the power to know what we really like in an earlier time.

Besides all these, some of us always tend to regard what they do well in as one of their interests. I do not know whether this is right or not. But I know this is not going to be as simple as a right or wrong question. Anyway it’s the main way when most of Chinese students try to understand something. Now, get to our point, some of us have the same problem with English-learning. Once they failed, their interest would never be restored, especially for those who are not so strong-minded. People have the inertia in staying away from sophisticated things and doing what they’ve already been familiar with. That’s why we should struggle to get our holy mother tongue out of heads when we’re using a foreign language.

Certainly you will feel that you are struggling and soon look like losing hope. But it’s fine, it is the threshold lies there. After struggling, you are going to find something nice. I know you have been wondering what I’ve found when I crossed the threshold. And I can tell you that I found nothing but lovely English words. Lovely? True! I’ve never felt memorizing English words such a pleasant job before I reached this new level. It is like I’m feeling into my heart and following my inner voice. So I read and I write, I also listen and speak, but never do these on purpose. I know that I’m going to let it come naturally because I’m aiming at nothing! All that is the outcome from interest and enthusiasm.

I’ve never regaled my friends with my experience in learning English for a reason that may sound funny to you. I do not know how. Because we Chinese tend to cast a negative implication on those things. I do not want others to view me as an arrogant person. Although sometimes they probably have been joking with me, but I’m not going to say a word about my studying. In fact, sharing something else with them would make us feel even closer. Maybe I’m not going to share my experience or understanding any more, but I’ll share something more close to daily life in an English form in the future with you guys instead.

OK, I have to end this lengthy talk. Hope you can learn something from all above. It is really my pleasure to help you to establish a new understanding on English-learning. Best wishes!
