PhD Scholarship in Geotechnical Engineering
|
|
Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering City University of Hong Kong Kowloon, Hong Kong Applications are invited for PhD scholarships or Graduate Research Assistantships in the area of Geotechnical Engineering in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering. The formal PhD program should start from the fall semester of the academic calendar year (e.g., September 2012) or occasionally from the spring semester (e.g., March 2012). Online applications are accepted anytime of the year. The PhD scholarship offers a competitive monthly stipend of around HK$13,500 and covers a normal duration of 3 years. Some short-term (6-12 months), pre-PhD research assistant (RA) positions are also available with salary commensurate with the qualification of the applicant, and applications will be considered until the positions are filled. Interested candidates should send curriculum vitae, copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts with GPAs, English proficiency level (i.e., GRE, TOEFL, IELTS or CET-6) and a list of publication (if any) directly to Prof. Jeff Wang (jefwang@cityu.edu.hk) for preliminary evaluation. Successful applicants are expected to conduct high-quality research towards a PhD degree under the supervision of Prof. Jeff Wang. The PhD research will fall within the broad area of computational geomechanics but some particular topics of keen interest and under active development include micromechanics of granular soils, DEM/FEM/coupled-multiscale modeling of geomaterials, micromechanism-based constitutive modeling and nano-scale simulation of soil minerals. The candidates are expected to hold a BSc or MSc/MPhil degree in Civil /Geotechnical Engineering or other related areas, and have good self-motivation, independent working and problem-solving capabilities. Previous experience in DEM/FEM modeling or other computational mechanics research is a big added advantage. City University of Hong Kong, founded in 1984, is one of the eight government-funded institutions in Hong Kong. The university has a strong team of outstanding faculty members with diverse research interests and professional expertise, who are dedicated to advancing knowledge. Based on the academic ranking of world universities by Wuhan University in 2009, City University of Hong Kong is ranked 29th in Engineering in the world (1st in Hong Kong). Prof. Jeff Wang is an internationally recognized expert in micromechanical (DEM) modeling of granular soils. He is the recipient of the prestigious national and international awards including 2011 Geotechnical Research Medal from the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) and 2009 Higher Education Institutions Research Excellence Award (PRC).
