The outer membrane of E. coli is composed of LPS, a phospholipid layer, and PGN (PGN belongs to periplasm). The strength of cell wall depends largely on LPS and PGN, whose structure is mechanically strong network[21, 22]. Therefore, the cell outer membrane and PGN, which are firm and resilient, play an important role in the maintenance of cell morphology. And the cell outer membrane is firstly exposed to the environment. For sample 2 in the presence of a small amount of QDs (5×10-8 mol/L), the figure (Fig. 6 (b)) suggests the cell out membrane as the outermost layer deformed and twisted to some extent. However, the cells still keep their rod shape and the morphology of the cells has not changed. The firm and resilient PGN of cells can provide the mechanical protection to maintain cell morphology, so it is not seriously damaged. Thus, the cells morphology is not changed for the sample 2. As to the sample 4 after treated by a higher concentration of QDs (20×10-8 mol/L), some of the cells could not maintain the cell morphology and elliptical cells were observed. The phenomenon suggests that both the out membrane and PGN of the cells might be destroyed. Thus, these cells become elliptical without the mechanically strong network. When the concentration of QDs is 100×10-8 mol/L, almost all of the cells become elliptical. It also shows that the out membrane and PGN, whose structure is mechanically strong network, are seriously damaged.
