tips for attending some international academic conferences (26 June 2011)

According to my own experiences, these following words might be of some significance to those studying abroad and at home. Please do not hesitate to offer your comments if you would like to share something. Vielen Dank! 1. Print or ask for the conference notice in advance, choose the panel you feel most interested in or some big names would present his/ her ideas 2. Bring with you a dozen business cards in case you can exchange yours with some guys who have the same or similar research interest during the coffee break. Just to avoid being too embarrassed if you were given a business card while you forgot to take yours. 3. Maybe you can write a letter or email to some renowned person after receiving their business card or according to their contact info. in the conference pamphlets. 4. Better get to the conference site earlier to find some useful or interesting materials. First, sometimes you could get what you long to read but for free. Second, this would help you learn something about the presentations so that you could know better about whole content, after all every presentation would be limited within 10-15 minutes and you might not get a clear understanding of what the author intends to offer. Third, you can raise a valuable question at the conference for the speaker to give his or her feedback. Aimless or very casual attendance of a conference would to a large extent be a waste of time and energy. Fourth, this might be of help for you make some summaries after the participation because you can easily remember what was argued or debated during the presentation. Please remember, sometimes you get sparked with some great ideas with a flash while listening to them. 5. Maybe you can have some pictures with some big names taken if with their willingness. Since you are determined to enter the academia in the future, you need to plan your research job and progress in the long run---could this be a kind of “strategy” for your professional career? If you never think of doing this or that research in your life, ok, just let bygone be bygones. 7. Smile. Smile. Smile whenever you are looking at some people. Sometimes, you are not aware of your facial expressions which might be too serious and appear not that friendly. Perhaps you are thinking about something concerning yourself, but others would not know your mind and mistake your behavior for unhappiness or annoyance or impatience. So imagine you are the speaker, do you think you are caring about how the audience react to your speech? Smile costs you nothing, but might pay back with unexpected something. Even when you ask the service staff for some help, please try to raise your question with a smile. Nobody would like to offer sincere help to a cold-blooded. Again, suppose one day you are doing the same thing at the conference------ 8. Wear suitable, tidy and clean clothes. This is to develop your sense of being professional and make the first impression to those encountering you. Also, this shows you are respecting those you meet with and you might be respected as a return. Sometimes, you need a tie and a suit and a pair of black leather shoes. You construct your self- image and help to construct the image of the institution you belong to. 9. Better take down some notes in time. If you feel not sure of some points the speaker deals with, try to seize the opportunity to ask him or her repeat. Sometimes, you feel greatly surprised at what you are treated with a fruitful response from the targeted person who might tell more than your own question and a simple of his sentence would act as a useful guidance in your own research, saving you a lot of time and far-fetched wondering. 10. Every time you feel necessary to comment on this, never hesitate to share. You never have any loss of your ideas but gain from friendly interactions. Alles Gute!
