Red songs work both ways Phyweiw As the 90 anniversary of CPC draws closer, the red songs have been taking Chinese people by storm. All kinds of singing competitions and vocal concerts step magnificently into the limelight of various dazzling stages. All of a sudden, the world seemingly rolls back to the red years, an era all the middle-aged could never obliterate the memories. The media went further and reported that in Chongqing, where the red song wind blows, some patients suffering from cancer and other severe diseases went so far as to resort to red songs to ease their pain! Ridiculous! As most of us start to doubt whether we would be brought back to the Left Years, the leader of CPC Publicity Dept. clarified today that the red-song singing activities have nothing to do with the ideological reversion. But the leader also stressed that such activities are very important and can be regarded as a appropriate approach to celebrate CPC’s anniversary. We have to admit that in the old days these red songs indeed inspired our predecessors to take part in the revolution and contributed a large part to the foundation of new China. We also cannot deny most of the red songs boast beautiful tunes and elegantly-written lyrics, if not, how come these red songs still be sung by our generation and titled as red tradition! But why such activities triggered heated dispute nationwide ? Here’s the rug. Does today’s society lack the capability of providing more exciting and impassioned music works? Can an inspiring method still works after over fifty years? Will the younger generation have the same feeling as their parents when listening to such red songs? Most of the cases, it is weird and sort of amusing when I see those actors wearing the military uniform of Red Army. Definitely I can not find the weathered appearance in their porcelain-white faces and also can not trace the ups and downs of life through their performances. In a word, such activities can never keep me reminiscent of the glorious past and can not stir a single ripple in my inner retreat. Jun 23, 2011 |
