Refuse Mediocrity

Refuse Mediocrity Phyweiw Recently I heard of much comments on the heated topic----mediocrity, some are for and some are against. I think such a kind of debate comes from the misunderstanding and even mistakenly confusing the two words: mediocrity and ordinary. When participating the crucial Gao Kao, one must meticulously exam what the composition title means before starting to write down. If deviated from the correct orientation, the article would not be marked a high score and what¡¯s more, the zero rating probability can not be ruled out. As for the mediocrity, we should evaluate its correct meaning from its semantic as well as pragmatic aspects and only through thus can we get hold of its core applications. According to the New Chinese Dictionary, mediocrity means ordinary and not outstanding, commonplace. So many people directly equal the two words and expand their composition. Actually, such kind of explanation is not correct as in our daily language environment, or from the perspective of pragmatics, mediocrity otherwise means incompetent and lack of capability. The stress of this word lies in the incompetence. Therefore, the mediocrity is different from ordinary. They are not synonymous in most cases. Mediocrity is more often than not taken derogatorily while ordinary is usually neutral and even a little bit complimentary, if any. So the title of this year¡¯s Jiangsu Gao Kao Chinese composition, in my view, is really good and all the examinees should overtly acclaim refusing mediocrity and embracing prominence. Jun 22, 2011 |
