There is a paradox between knowledge and ignorance. As John Kennedy said, the greater our knowledge increases, the greater our ignorance unfolds. Our knowledge could be described by a small circle, and ignorance is the space outside the circle. When circle expanded, meaning knowledge increased, more scope of ignorance is touched, and thus ignorance grew as well. An example: CFCs, who is also named as Freon, were discovered in the early 1930s and are widely used for many kinds of industrial, commercial, and household applications after World War II because of its safety characteristics. It has been used extensively as fridge coolant, solvents, and hair mousse. Not until early 1970s was CFCs found to be a potentially destruction to ozone layer. But conclusive evidence of ozone loss was not discovered until 1984. By 1990 CFCs had made a general thinning of the ozone layer worldwide. It has posed a serious environmental threat now. With the discovery of CFCs our knowledge increased, but ignorance also increased. Ignorance is not a solvable problem, but rather an inescapable part of the human development. The advance of knowledge always carries with the advance of some form of ignorance. |
