Actor-politician pleads for family’s privacy after confirming existence of love child

los angeles ? Arnold Schwarzenegger has admitted fathering an illegitimate child with a member of his household staff and keeping it secret for more than a decade.
His wife, Maria Shriver, only recently discovered the truth and that was the real reason for the couple’s separation after 25 years of marriage. They insisted the decision was “amicable.”
The child was born before Schwarzenegger ran for the governorship of California in 2003, and the mother continued working for the couple throughout his time in office.
The woman, who has not been named, worked for them for 20 years and retired in January, at about the same time as Schwarzenegger finished his second term. The 63-year-old actor said he told his wife about the child soon after leaving office.
Shriver, 55, who is said to have been “completely distraught” when she learned of the child, then left their mansion and moved into a hotel.
Friends of Schwarzenegger said he took financial responsibility for the child. Rumours that he had fathered a child out of wedlock had been circulating for days.
Schwarzenegger said: “After leaving the governor’s office, I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago. I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.”
He asked for his family to be left alone in an “extremely difficult time”, adding: “While I deserve attention and criticism, my family does not.”
They have four children — Katherine, 21, Christina, 19, Patrick, 17, and Christopher, 13. Schwarzenegger was seen hugging Katherine hours before his announcement.
In a statement, Shriver said: “This is a painful and heartbreaking time. As a mother, my concern is for the children. I ask for compassion, respect and privacy as my children and I try to rebuild our lives and heal.”
The former employee was married when the child was born. She had maintained that the father was her thenhusband. She said she had left voluntarily with a severance payment and “on good terms” with Schwarzenegger and Shriver. She said: “I wanted to achieve my 20 years, then I asked to retire.”
The disclosure caps a spate of U.S. gubernatorial scandals in recent years, including a prostitution scandal that forced Eliot Spitzer from office in New York and the extramarital affair admitted by South Carolina’s Mark Sanford.
“Another guy gov admits 2 cheating on his wife,” former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm, now a University of California professor, said in a Twitter message Tuesday. “Maybe we need more women governors. Guys: Keep ur pants zipped, for Pete’s sake.”
Shriver, niece of former president John F. Kennedy, was said to have already been unhappy in the marriage, but to have struggled against ending it because of her Catholic faith. In 2003, she stood by her husband as he faced several allegations of sexual harassment over a 25-year period.
After the separation, Schwarzenegger said he and his wife still “both love each other very much” and were “taking one day at a time.”
But Shriver has reportedly already consulted a financial adviser about a settlement.
