Title: Developments in full-mine integration of monitoring and control systems in the United Kingdom
Abstract: In the 1960s, a `systems' strategy was adopted within the UK mining industry, which emphasized the importance of the interdependence of the subsystems of the mining process. The authors briefly analyze the reasons for only a limited success of some of the projects current at the time, which contributed to the shelving of full mine integration by the end of the 1960s. With the introduction of minicomputers for monitoring and control in the 1970s, British Coal (formerly the National Coal Board) developed a standardized computer system for analyzing and presenting data called MINOS. The success of this system in monitoring and controlling subsystems has resulted in a reexamination of full mine integration and has led to the adoption of a strategy for a communication infrastructure that will enable information to be exchanged between subsystems. This infrastructure is known as the Integrated Communications Network (ICON). The authors conclude by describing how suppliers, users, and the mining industry as a whole are benefiting by adopting rational standards |
