The permeate obtained by ultrafiltration had ameasurable CODvalue aswell as high salinity.Nevertheless, it is expected to have a much lower oil content, as COD values include soluble components such as small molecule acids that do not contribute to the O&G measure, regulated for off-shore disposal (29). As long as O&G limitations are met, UF may be a sufficient method for the treatment of this stream. For onshore wells, UF treatment would be a good choice for pretreatment of this streambefore using ROorNF to remove salts and small molecule contaminants. As described earlier, fouling is the limiting issue in the use ofUFmembranes for producedwater treatment.Hence, 24 h dead-end fouling tests were conducted using PW-A as the feed. Figure 1 shows the normalized flux versus time data from such experiments for each membrane. During the filtration of the produced water, the normalized flux of the PAN/PAN-g-PEOblendmembrane remainedmuch above that of the commercial PAN membrane. The drastic flux decrease immediately upon contact with the foulant, ob- served for the commercial membrane, is characteristic of adsorptive fouling. The more gradual flux decrease for the blendmembrane is typical for cake deposition (18, 30). After 24 h, the blend membrane lost 68% of its flux, whereas the commercial PAN membrane lost 92%. In fact, even though the initial PWP of the commercial PAN membrane was approximately twice that of the PAN/PAN-g-PEO blend membrane, its final flux was ∼40% lower. The total volume of solution filtered through PAN-g-PEO blendmembrane in this time period was 420mL vs 230mL for the control. Upon switching to a water feed, both membranes recovered a portion of their fluxes. The fact that the recovery was lower for the PAN/PAN-g-PEO blend membrane could be due to the formation of amore compact cake layer. After a backwash to remove the cake layer, the PAN/PAN-g-PEO membranerecovered its initial flux completely. Backwashing is a common physical cleaning method that allows for the mechanical removal of accumulated particulates not strongly adsorbed to the membrane surface. The complete recovery of the initial flux indicates that even with this complex feed, the blendmembrane resisted irreversible, adsorptive fouling, the first demonstration of such for a polymericUFmembrane, to the authors¡¯ knowledge. Under similar conditions, the Sepro PAN-400 lost 37% of its flux irreversibly. The ability of PAN/PAN-g-PEO blend UF membranes to better maintain and recover their flux shows the distinct advantage of such membranes over a commercial PANUFmembrane of similar selectivity. |
