Is it safe? We just don’t know

CONTAMINANTS can be found pretty well everywhere and most of these chemicals will be found in the blood of just about everyone. Take a swab from an office window and they will be there, so their presence in food is not a surprise at all. The issue is whether their presence is of any concern. Individually, these chemicals are at such low levels that they are regarded as safe, but what we don’t know is the effect they might have when mixed together, even in these tiny quantities. We know little about mixtures of chemicals as a possible cause of health problems and science is only beginning to get to grips with the issue. But the progress scientists are making does suggest that it is possible to have a mixture that does have an impact on health. It has been demonstrated in fish, mice and rats. I don’t think that we have any real idea — when you have maybe 100 of these contaminants in your body, all at low concentratations — whether it’s going to be a problem. I don’t think we even know yet how to find out. It’s very difficult to know how to design experiments. There are concerns that many of the potential health problems may not manifest themselves until late in life. An embryo might be made more prone to testicular cancer but that would not be picked up until puberty. For the moment, though, there’s very little hard science behind the fears. |
