Queen Victoria is well known in historical circles being the monarch that inspired the Victorian Era that we know today. She was a very interesting character and while the Victorian Era was a bit prudish, she was anything but. She was known to have a very wicked sense of humor and a love for life. Queen Victoria was of Germanic descent and of the House of Hanover. She was also the last queen to rule as a Hanover. After her death, the royal family was renamed Windsor to put distance between themselves and the German connection. However, Victoria is still remembered as one of England’s strongest and most capable monarchs. When Victoria married Albert, she started the tradition of wearing white as a bride. The color white represents fidelity and purity. Before Victoria started the trend, all wedding dresses were black or of darker colors. Her wearing white ushered in the use of white for the bride. This custom is followed even today in modern society. The main color for a wedding dress traditionally is still white. Albert and Victoria had children numbering nine. Some of her children married into many of Europe’s royal families, as did their descendants. Today she is still considered to be Europe’s Grandmother. This title is not erroneous. Many of today’s European royals can trace their family line straight back to one of the children of Albert and Victoria. The royal bloodline can still be traced back to Albert and Victoria. Queen Elisabeth II and Prince Phillip of England can trace their bloodline back to Queen Victoria. They are both the great- great grandchildren of Queen Victoria. Their children also share this bloodline going back to Victoria and Albert, as do many other European Royal families in Europe today. |
