Mahatma Gandhi is considered as one of the greatest leader in the history of India as well as of the world. He is especially famous for his ideology, known as Satyagraha, which means promoting the truth. He practiced non-violence means for protests and expressions. He is the pioneer of these ideas and many great leaders of the world have been influenced by this idea and often mentioned and honored him for it. Mahatma Gandhi played an important role in the independence of India. He is officially named as the “Father of the Nation”. He also took active part in the Civil Right Movement in South Africa. He was born on October 2nd, 1869 in Bombay, India. He got married to Kasturbai Makhanji when he was 14 years old. He was killed on January 30th, 1948. He attended University College London from 1888 to 1891 to study law. During his stay in London, he was a member of the executive committee of Vegetarian Society of London. He was elected the leader of Indian National Congress in 1921. He led different movements against the British Government ruling in India, including the famous Dandi Salt March in 1930, Quit India civil disobedience in 1942 and etc. Because of his active involvement, he served a number of years in both Indian and South African jails. He received numerous awards and prize, including nomination of five Noble peace awards. His birthday is served as the International Day of Non-Violence authorized the United Nations General Assembly. A lot of films have been made based on his life and works in both Indian and English Language, including the 1982 film Gandhi which won an Oscar for the best movie of the year. |

甘地是印度历史上、也是世界历史上最伟大的领导人之一。他的思想学说——非暴力不合作令他名声大噪。他实践着非暴力不合作，表达抗议与诉求。他是非暴力不合作思想的先行者。世界上很多伟大的领导人受此思想影响，对甘地赞誉有加。甘地在印度独立过程中发挥重要作用。他被官方称作“国父”。他也积极参与南非民权运动。甘地于1869年10月2日生于印度孟买。14岁的时候与Kasturbai Makhanji结婚。1948年1月30日甘地被人杀死。 1888年至1891年间他在伦敦大学学院学习法律。旅居伦敦期间，甘地是伦敦素食主义执行委员会成员。1921年甘地获选成为印度国会领导人。他领导了许多运动抵制英国的殖民统治，比如著名的1930抗盐税大游行，1942释放印度反抗公民运动。由于甘地积极参与运动，他在印度和南非的监狱中度过了多年时光。甘地获奖无数，包括五次诺贝尔和平奖提名。联合国大会将甘地的生日作为非暴力运动国际日。根据甘地的生活与工作拍摄了许多印度文和英文的电影，这其中包括获得1982年奥斯卡最佳影片奖的同名电影《甘地》。 |
